Most dramatic exits in I’m a Celeb history after Kerri-Anne Kennerley quit four days into the show

Channel Ten’s reality series I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! is not for the faint-hearted.

While most Australian celebrities enter the jungle in the hope to be crowned King or Queen for their chosen charity, others are unable to handle the rigorous tucker trials.

This season, Kerri-Anne Kennerley sensationally quit the show after refusing to eat animals’ testicles during one episode.

The television royalty, 69, copped endless amounts of backlash for her decision as viewers and fans accused her refusing to be a ‘team player’.

But she is not the first, and most likely won’t be the last, to give up and leave the jungle due to the show’s tough and physically demanding challenges.

There have been a handful of stars who have left the show on their own terms, rather than being voted out – which has left fans and viewers disappointed.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley

Kerri-Anne’s time on the series came to an end after only four days in the South African jungle.

Drama unfolded when Kerri-Anne and Domenica Calarco took part in an eating challenge alongside former Australian Idol judge Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson and radio host Woody Whitelaw, where they had to eat a variety of animal testicles in order to win dinner for the rest of the group.

But Kerri-Anne wasn’t having any of it, even after the celebrities told her it ‘tastes just like meatballs’ and ‘wasn’t that bad’.

This caused Dom to see red after she took a bite and Kerri-Anne refused.

‘Miss big contract lady, ”Can’t tell me what to do.” I don’t want your (make-up), I don’t want your Revlon 1989 lipstick, doll,’ she raged.

‘It’s not fair – it’s not fair to everyone in there who actually tries. Why are you here, bro? Legit, actually, why are you here?!’

She then accused the Studio 10 star of having no respect or decency for anyone but herself.

‘Literally no respect or decency for anyone else but yourself. I’ve never met anyone so self-centred in my life,’ Dom continued.

When she returned to camp, Kerri-Anne said the ‘abuse’ from Dom was ‘overwhelming’.

‘To be called the most self-centred b***h she’s ever met. And the contract queen time and time again. I would have finished [the challenge], if she would have finished. It was never going to happen,’ she said in tears.

Upset at having to do three trials in a row, Kerri-Anne then told her campmates she was leaving, uttering the famous words, ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’

Bernard Tomic

During the 2018 season, tennis ‘bad boy’ Bernard Tomic dramatically backed down.

Tomic’s challenge that made him quit saw him take part in an aerial obstacle course that required him to wear a pair of goggles that made everything appear upside down.

‘I am really sick. I am about to vomit, I am out, I am so sick,’ he said while still hanging from the ledge.

Revealing he’d ‘never felt so ill before’, he called out those famous words: ‘I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!’

Stopping the challenge, the crew pulled Tomic back to the platform where medics and hosts Julia Morris and Doctor Chris Brown rushed to his side.

‘He started sweating off his skin way before he said “I’m a celebrity get me out of here!”,’ said Chris.

With the trial set to push the contestants to their limits, the tennis ‘bad boy’ was then asked to head back to camp with his three stars he’d earned and say his goodbyes.

Anthony Mundine

Boxer Anthony Mundine was left ‘pretty shaken up’ from the viper room trial which saw him go underground in a dark box full of snakes.

The boxer exited the show ‘within hours’ of competing in the viper room challenge against Danny Green.

Video posted to Twitter shows Mundine saying ‘I’m the man, get me out of here’, before dramatically walking off the TV show’s set.

Mundine held his face in his hands as hosts Julia Morris and Chris Brown announced that he and Green would be taking part in the viper room challenge.

Host Chris later said Mundine’s decision to walk had come as a shock to the other contestants, but guessed the boxer had been more upset by the trial than he had initially let on.

‘He was obviously trying to hide it, hide how distressed he was through it – it’s very confronting to be surrounded by that many snakes if you have a fear of them,’ Chris said.

‘We asked him before the trial… do any of [the viper room’s challenges] press your buttons and he said all of them.’

Beau Ryan

Last year, in season eight, Beau Ryan walked out on the 14th day in the jungle – which cost him $200,000.

His reason was sparked by a late-night discussion with his campmates, as he admitted he missed his family and needed to leave.

‘As you know the last couple of days I’ve been struggling, and today I was a bit broken. It’s been really hard for me,’ he said on the show.

‘The reason I did this show is to test myself, which I have. I’ve shown Australia the good, bad and ugly of me.

‘I’ve had some moments where I regret, some moments I don’t and I’m proud of everything that’s happened.’

‘I remember growing up and a guy two houses down from me – the dad was always away for work. I don’t want to be that dad,’ he continued.

‘My kids need their dad. My wife needs a husband, and I need to find myself back.

‘I came in here to prove myself. I can’t gain anything else from this show. My journey here is over, and I love you guys.’

He then uttered the famous words: ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.’

The announcement brought about mixed opinions from viewers, who were shocked with his decision to leave the show – and the chance to win money for his chosen charity.

‘You are also leaving your charity, which is why you are there, Beau. Zero respect from me,’ one critic wrote.

Others questioned his hosting duties on The Amazing Race, a gig which sees him present in remote locations far away from his family for weeks on end.

Mel Buttle

Comedian Mel Buttle also left in 2021’s season after a snake near their campsite set off her phobia.

In emotional scenes, she sensationally quit the show after co-star Pettifleur Berenger spotted a snake near their campsite.

Breaking down in tears, Mel revealed she had ‘a huge phobia of snakes’, and had been struggling ever since Pettifleur’s sighting.

‘I’m not even afraid that they’re gonna bite me. It’s not that. It’s the image of them. And it’s of even a photo of them,’ she began.

‘And I wanted to try and come here and see how long… how well I would go. And then today, with Pettifleur, I have been losing my mind all day.’

She added: ‘I feel like s**t, doing this. But I… I, um, I have to go, unfortunately.’

Her emotional announcement left her co-stars stunned but sympathetic about her decision to quit the show.

Maintaining her sense of humour, Mel added: ‘I know I’m gonna regret it… But I can always go on Bachelor in Paradise.’

As she said her goodbyes, Mel confessed she was worried she was going to be replaced on the show by ‘some d**khead’.

I’m a Celebrity continues on Sunday at 7.30pm on Channel 10
