Hidden travel gem: How to get to Beauchamp Falls in Otway Forest Park near Melbourne

Adventure seekers have discovered a magical waterfall hidden in a stunning national park just outside a major Australian city. 

Beauchamp Falls is known as one of the most stunning falls in the Otway Forest Park, two hours and forty minutes’ drive south-west of Melbourne and only 35 kilometres inland from the famous Great Ocean Road. 

The towering waterfall is a spectacular reward at the end of a three-kilometre hiking trail that winds through the park’s enchanting rainforest. 

Water cascades 20 metres down the rock face covered in vines and moss into a large pool below which visitors have enjoyed taking a dip in. 

While the waters may be getting icy as the weather starts to cool, Beachamp Falls are just as spectacular in the winter as visitors can see in the roaring falls in all their glory after a bout of rain.

To get to the falls, visitors have to follow a moderately challenging walking trail that steeply descends to a viewing platform.

Through the thick forest of myrtle beech trees and giant ferns, some lucky walkers may even be able to spot a fairy house at the bottle of a tree trunk.

There is no direct access down to the falls but from the lookout, brave hikers can carefully navigate the rocky and sometimes slippery descent down to the water’s edge. 

People who have frequented the area say winter is the best time to visit as there are fewer tourists so guests may have the area to themselves.

One traveller called Beauchamp Falls ‘unbelievably beautiful’ while another recommended going early in the morning. 

‘We went early at around 8am and there was nobody there. The water was roaring with all of the rain we have had lately,’ they wrote online.     

‘One of the best waterfalls I have ever visited. Such a beautiful hike to get to it, not too difficult. A really rewarding waterfall…Can swim in the water if you want. It’s quite a big waterfall and really creates a peaceful vibe,’ a second said. 

Someone recommended people wear ‘sturdy walking shoes’ as some sections near the waterfall can get muddy and has slippery rocks.
