A man has been shot dead by police after allegedly running at officers with knives.

Police were called to a home on Bel Air Avenue in Kirwan, in Townsville, at about 4.40pm on Friday, following reports the man had threatened to self-harm. 

The man is understood to have been shot ‘several times’ in the chest.

Officers immediately began to give the man CPR before paramedics arrived. 

The man, who was involved in a siege with police on Thursday, died at the scene. 

A Queensland Police spokesperson said investigations are underway.
