‘Police wanted to prosecute over porn on Green’s computer’

Officers claim they unearthed the X-rated material while raiding Damian Green’s parliamentary office during an inquiry into government leaks

Porn found on Damian Green’s computer was ‘so extreme’ the police wanted the CPS to prosecute, it has been alleged.

The incriminating files were discovered on the Deputy Prime Minister’s Commons computer, during a controversial Metropolitan Police raid in November 2008.

The alleged ‘disturbing material’ was then said to have been referred by police to the Director of Public Prosecutions at the time, Sir Keir Starmer.

However, the files, which did not feature children, were not ruled to be criminal and no action was taken.

A source told the Sun: ‘Starmer was of the view it did not cross the threshold of criminality.’

Former assistant Met Commissioner Bob Quick said the ‘extreme’ pornography was found by detectives investigating a civil service leak.

Green was arrested and subject to search warrants as the probe was carried out – leading to bad blood between the pair.

It has taken nine years for the explosive information to be released, but Quick insists he was ready to reveal it sooner.

However, he left the Met amid disgrace in 2009 after spoiling a major anti-terror raid by carrying uncovered secret papers.

Quick will give evidence on what was found in 2008 to a Cabinet Office inquiry on Monday.

Hitting back at today’s claims, revealed in the Sunday Times, Mr Green said in a statement: ‘This story is completely untrue and comes from a tainted and untrustworthy source.

‘I’ve been aware for some years that the discredited former assistant commissioner Bob Quick has tried to cause me political damage by leaking false information about the raid on my parliamentary office.

‘No newspaper has reported this story due to the complete lack of any evidence.

‘The police have never suggested to me that inappropriate material was found on my Parliamentary computer.

‘Nor did I have a ‘private’ computer, as has been claimed. The allegations about the material and the computer, now nine years old, are false.

‘They amount to little more than an unscrupulous character assassination.’

The Cabinet probe was already looking into claims Mr Green made an inappropriate sexual advance to activist Kate Maltby.

His political future hangs on the findings of the probe and Home Secretary Amber Rudd today warned of a ‘clear out’ in Westminster of wrongdoers.

Ms Rudd insisted the Government would not fall if Mr Green was forced to resign, despite the fact he is Mrs May’s oldest and closest friend in politics.

Two Conservative MPs, Anna Soubry and Heidi Allen, called for Mr Green to stand aside from his post as First Secretary of State during the investigation today.

The expanded Cabinet Office examination of Mr Green comes as at least five Tory MPs face some kind of inquiry over the Westminster harassment scandal, plus Charlie Elphicke who has been suspended from the party and referred to police.

Minister Mark Garnier is being examined by the Cabinet Office while backbenchers Dan Poulter, Daniel Kawczynski and Stephen Crabb are subject to party probes.

No complaint has yet been lodged against Chris Pincher despite allegations against him in today’s papers. Sir Michael Fallon’s shock resignation has effectively ended investigation into him.

Today’s revelations come after Labour MP John Mann warned up to 12 MPs could be forced to resign and trigger by-elections.
