McDonald’s has rolled out some major changes to the way it cooks its burgers, and burger lovers are fired up.
Recently, McDonald’s announced it would be revamping some of its classic menu items to make them ‘even better’ than they were before.
In the face of challenges from other popular fast food joints like Five Guys and Burger King, the food giant will be tweaking the recipes of its Classic Cheeseburger, Big Mac, Hamburger, and its Double Cheeseburger.
But there is one menu change in particular that has left fast food fans in uproar – and has prompted some to go as far as to threaten a boycott of the burger chain altogether.

The fast-food giant will be adding onions while the burgers are still on the grill for a flavor boost, however, it seems that the majority of people are boycotting the ‘mistake’
As part of its menu updates, the chain has announced that it will now be adding onions to its burgers while they are still on the grill in order to give the patties a flavor boost.
However, for those customers who prefer to order their meals without onions, this means they will now be unable to do so – because the flavor of the vegetable will have already permeated the burger by the time it has finished cooking.
People flooded Twitter with comments criticizing the transformed recipe, some even calling it ‘trash.’
One person said: ‘McDonald’s is making a mistake by changing the taste of their burgers. If you need an example of, potentially, how big of a mistake, just remember, or look up online, the disaster that was New Coke. ‘
‘No thanks. I prefer to make my food at home, so I decide what to put in it,’ said another person.
Someone else commented: ‘I’m allergic to onions so I guess they lost a customer.’
‘If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it,’ wrote another user.
Others slammed the fast food giant, claiming that they would be taking their business to McDonald’s competitors from now on.

One person said: ‘I guess McDonald’s really doesn’t want my business. In their grand wisdom they are going to make burgers with onions already in the patties it’s not bad enough they are already put a million onions on there. Now we don’t get a choice.
‘I hate onions. And I can go right across the street in my town to Burger King he doesn’t do that. Or a little up the road to Wendy’s who doesn’t either.’
‘How about reducing the sodium? Every bite tastes like a mouthful of salt and fat,’ commented another person.
One user added: ‘I agree I never want onion on my burger McDonald’s CEO and managers must think the public is stupid when saying you can customize your burger no matter what the grill will still smell and taste like onion.’
In addition to disliking the new ingredient, many people have blasted the burger joint for not thinking about those who are allergic.
‘I have a significant intolerance to onions. They make me quite ill within 15 -20 mins. So when I heard about this new recipe McDonald’s is rolling out, my first thought was I won’t be able to eat burgers there,’ explained one user.
Another user wrote: ‘As someone who hates onions, I’m worried about McDonald’s new policy of cooking onions directly on the grill. I won’t eat White Castle burgers for this very reason.’
‘Onions are trash,’ said someone else.
There were a few burger lovers who couldn’t wait to get their hands on an onion-infused patty
And while the majority of people couldn’t contain their disgust for the menu changes, there were a few burger lovers who couldn’t wait to get their hands on an onion-infused patty.
One person wrote: ‘Not 100% normal but getting there, tastes a lot better than it used to. About 67% normal I’d say.’
Another person added: ‘Mmm … I look forward to onions on the burgers!’
‘If people are eating McDonald’s, I don’t think onions are the only thing they have to worry about,’ another user commented.
‘So crazy that adults don’t appreciate onions and their flavor value,’ said one person.
McDonald’s announced the arrival of the menu changes in a press release earlier this week.
‘We found that small changes, like tweaking our process to get hotter, meltier cheese and adjusting our grill settings for a better sear, added up to a big difference in making our burgers more flavorful than ever,’ McDonald’s Senior Director of Culinary Innovation, Chef Chad Schafer, said in a statement.
Those changes will include ‘Softer, pillowy buns that are freshly toasted to a golden brown,’ along with ‘perfectly melted cheese that will make you want to savor every last bit off the wrapper.’
The menu changes come after the fast food giant closed its corporate office and laid off hundreds of people
CEO Chris Kempczinski said in a January email there would be ‘difficult discussions and decisions ahead,’ two months before hundreds of corporate staffers were laid off
They will also feature ‘Juicier, caramelized flavor from adding white onions to the patties while they’re still on the grill,’ and ‘even more of everyone’s favorite Big Mac sauce, bringing more tangy sweetness in every Big Mac bite,’ according to McDonald’s.
Previously the revamped burgers were made available in Australia, Belgium, and Canada, and in the US are available in and around Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Tucson, Portland, and Sacramento.
The fast food giant said all of its locations will have implemented the changes by the end of 2023.

McDonald’s was forced to restructure and consolidate operations to save on costs.
In a January letter to staff, CEO Chris Kempczinski said the corporate job cuts would help the business grow, warning that the company had become unfocused and innovation had been stunted.
‘We had across the globe 70 different, distinct versions of what a crispy chicken sandwich would look like,’ he wrote. ‘I don’t need 70 different permutations of a chicken sandwich.’
Among the lay-offs were senior employees who had worked for the company for decades – some going as far as to write emotional goodbye messages to colleagues after receiving the news.
Before the cuts, McDonald’s employed more than 150,000 people globally in corporate roles and its company-owned restaurants – 70 percent outside the country, according to a statement made by the chain in February.
