‘All the people saying “get a sense of humour,” behind this joke are millions of helpless animals trembling in fear and pleading for their life at a slaughterhouse, with no one to help them before they are carelessly butchered,’ said another.

In an online response to the post Woolworths said: ‘Hi Lesley, thanks for sharing this with us. While we understand our teams light-hearted touch with the display, we would never intentionally offend anyone.

‘We do take all feedback like this seriously and we’ll be sharing your comments regarding this with our team to take into consideration for future displays in store.’
