The streaming shows that have been scrapped after one season

Following the ax of fan favorite National Treasure: Edge of History on Disney+, it seems that no series is safe.

Dozens of shows on sites including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV have all been ruthlessly given the boot.

And, although some last longer than others, there are a whole host of titles that have only made it through a single season.

Here, FEMAIL reveals the most popular streaming shows that have been pulled from screens in recent months after just one series.

Following the ax of fan favorite National Treasure: Edge of History on Disney+, it seems that no streaming series is safe

Night Sky (Amazon Prime Video)

Amazon Prime Video’s science fiction series Night Sky, which starred Oscar winners Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons, was brought to an end after just one season.

The series followed couple Irene and Franklin who discovered a chamber that leads to a deserted planet.

Having kept it a closely guarded secret for a number of years, the pair’s world gets turned upside down when an enigmatic young man enters their lives.

Night Sky made history when the first episode was beamed into space – in what was considered to be the first ever intergalactic premiere for a TV show.

It launched to largely positive reviews but it was short-lived.

The show ‘did not make a significant viewership impact’ that matched up with the sizeable costs associated with it, according to Deadline.

Uncoupled (Netflix)

Uncoupled, the 2022 Netflix series starring Neil Patrick Harris, was another to be cancelled after just one season.

Deadline was the first to report that the Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman comedy would not be returning.

The show’s premise was based around a gay man reentering singledom in New York City after he was abruptly dumped by his partner of 17 years.

‘Overnight, Michael has to confront two nightmares: losing what he thought was his soulmate and suddenly finding himself a single gay man in his mid-forties in New York City,’ the official logline read.

The short-lived show first arrived on the streamer in July last year and the series peaked at number six on Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankings one week.

Signs that the show would not last on the platform came amid speculation that Uncoupled was being shopped around to another network, but it never came to fruition.

Paper Girls (Amazon Prime Video)

Amazon Prime Video’s Paper Girls series had the potential to be a breakout hit for the streaming platform.

The sci-fi drama followed four friends who had their paper routes disrupted when they unknowingly time travelled to 2019.

They ‘came face-to-face with their adult selves and and learned how to work together to save the world,’ according to IMDb.

It had received good reviews but was not pulling in the numbers and had failed to break into the US viewing charts at all.

As such, just over a month after its debut, it was announced that the series would not be getting a second installment.

It seemed that the show was another victim of being released too close to the fourth season of Stranger Things which viewers were drawn back into.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (Amazon Prime Video)

Amazon Prime Video released the I Know What You Did Last Summer series as a reboot of the 1997 thriller.

The box office hit spin-off promised to be a suspenseful series complete with teen drama, debauchery, and death.

Like the original project – which was based off the 1972 novel by Lois Duncan – the modernized work followed a group of teenagers one year after a deadly car accident that took place the night of their high school graduation.

But the series was met with mixed reviews with complaints about the quality of acting, plot holes and a range of unsatisfactory twists.

It also failed to create an audience fanbase which meant it was forced to go out with somewhat of a whimper.

It was announced last year that it would not be returning for a second installment.

Shantaram (Apple TV)

Late last year, it was reported that Apple TV Plus canceled Shantaram after just one 12-episode season.

The series, which was based on Gregory David Roberts’ 900-page 2003 novel, was previously eyed as a film adaptation before it was turned into the now short-lived show.

Shantaram followed a fugitive named Lin Ford looking to get lost in vibrant and chaotic 1980s Bombay.

Lin struggled to avoid the trouble he’s running from in an unfamiliar city and his life becomes even more complicated after meeting a woman named Karla.

The sprawling series was shot across two continents and it was severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

It had reportedly failed to generate the same kind of traction as Apple TV’s other more popular titles.

Amber Brown (Apple TV)

Apple TV quietly cancelled original comedy series Amber Brown after just one season.

The single-camera show was based on the bestselling books by Paula Danziger.

It followed a young girl as she navigated her way through her parents divorce using art and music.

But following the release of the 10-part series, it was not renewed for a second installment.

The streaming service did not officially release a statement as to why it shelved the project.

Deadline reported earlier this month that by the time the decision was made, the actor’s contracts had lapsed anyway.

Resident Evil (Netflix)

Apocalyptic thriller series Resident Evil, which was based on the extremely popular video game series, had been hotly anticipated ahead of its release in July 2022.

Set in 2036, 14 years after a deadly virus created a global apocalypse, it followed heroine Jade Wesker fight for survival in a world overrun by infected blood-thirsty creatures.

The young woman is haunted by her past in New Raccoon City and her father’s connections to the Umbrella Corporation as well as what happened to sister Billie.

The show got off to a strong start with 72 million viewings in the first week alone – but figures began dropping dramatically.

There was no official statement as to why the series was brought to an end after just one season.

But ratings were likely not helped by its release coinciding with that of Stranger Things.

1899 (Netflix)

Earlier this year, Netflix cancelled eight-episode mystery thriller 1899 which had debuted on the streaming platform in November 2022.

The series followed passengers on a migrant steamship forging west at the turn of the century.

The show’s creators, Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, released a joint statement on Instagram to announce the decision which read: ‘With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed.

‘We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.

‘That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget.’

The show had previously been immersed in controversy amid allegations the show had plagiarized its material from a Brazilian graphic novel.

Dear Edward (Apple TV)

Earlier this month, Apple TV executives stunned fans after cancelling Dear Edward after just one season.

The series, which centered around a survivor of a tragic event, was a favorite with viewers.

It told the story of Edward Adler, played by Colin O’Brien, having been adapted from the novel released in 2020.

The character was orphaned after a traumatic plane crash which killed his whole family and he had to find a way to rebuild his life and make new friends.

Edward was partially based on a real-life survivor of a crash called Ruben, who was also a sole survivor of a plane crash.

The tragic event had occurred when he was on the way back from a South Africa safari with his family – and he ended up living with his aunt and uncle.

Freeridge (Netflix)

Netflix left fans divided earlier this month after it revealed that comedy-drama Freeridge would not be returning for a second season.

The show, which was a spin off of popular series On My Block, only made its debut on the streaming platform in February.

Despite the massive success of its predecessor, Latina-led Freeridge appears to have lacked the same attraction, according to Rolling Stone.

Following siblings Gloria and Ines, along with their friends Demi and Cameron, the show saw the quartet deal with unleashing a curse bringing misfortune into their lives.

The decision to end the show left people divided, with some saddened by the news, and others agreeing it did not live up to the original.

The show, which featured a full POC cast, had a mere eight-episode run.

Three Pines (Amazon Prime Video)

Last month, Amazon Prime Video revealed that murder mystery Three Pines, starring Alfred Molina, had been given the chop.

Actress Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and showrunner Emilia di Giorlamo were among the cast and crew to address the decision to not renew the show and admitted they were finding it difficult to process.

The show, which was based on the novel series by Louise Penny, centered on Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.

Following the announcement, fans slammed Prime Video for not renewing the show, which they lauded for being ‘powerful and different’

The officer investigates a series of murders in an idyllic village in the Eastern Townships of Quebec where he discovers long-buried secrets while facing ghosts of his own.

Unlike the books, it includes a secondary storyline throughout the season, with Gamache investigating the disappearance of a young woman.

Willow (Disney+)

Last month, it was announced that the adventures of Willow Ufgood would not continue on Disney Plus.

The eight-episode season – set decades after the original 1988 movie starring Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer and Joanne Whaley – debuted in late December and concluded in mid-January.

After the eight-episode series wrapped up, Disney Plus also released the behind-the-scenes documentary Willow: Behind the Magic.

The series brought back Davis, 53, as Willow Ufgood, who leads a new group of misfits on a perilous journey.

It also made headlines last year when Talisa Garcia was cast, making her the first trans actress to be cast in a LucasFilm production.

The decision to ax the show came just days after Disney CEO Bob Iger said they were carefully reassessing the film slate from LucasFilm, including the future of the Star Wars franchise.
