Erling Haaland has broken the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season with his 35th goal of a remarkable campaign on Wednesday night.

The Norwegian ran through and made it 2-0 against West Ham with an impudent finish over Lukasz Fabianski, ensuring he went past Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer in the single-season scoring stakes.

Before leaving the pitch at the end of the game, Haaland was given a standing ovation by the entire Etihad crowd before his team-mates lined up to give him a guard of honour.

The scenes further evidenced Haaland’s popularity among his team-mates, with the Norwegian said to be a humble and crucial member of Pep Guardiola’s imperious squad.

His team-mates slapped him on the back of the head and back as he headed off with an enormous grin etched across his face. When he reached the end, he could be seen rubbing his back as if to wish away the pain, though the grin remained.

It marks yet another achievement in a remarkable first campaign in England for Haaland, who has scored a half-century of goals in all competitions for City this season, becoming the first player to do in England in just under 100 years.

Cole and Shearer, who scored 34 each in the 1993-94 and 1994-95 campaigns respectively, both achieved the feat over 42 games, further evidencing the stark nature of Haaland’s feat.

A sense of foreboding was abound for West Ham from the start of the evening, with Haaland having scored his first goal in English football against them back in August. Irrespective of his terrorising of Ben Johnson and Kurt Zouma that day, few would have backed him to go and score a further 50 goals – and counting.

His 34th goal of the Premier League season came from the penalty spot at Fulham on the weekend, with Haaland missing a number of presentable opportunities to break the record there and then.

City fans, understandably totally enthralled by their star striker, revelled in him achieving the feat at home.

The 22-year-old has been prolific in all aspects for Pep Guardiola’s side, having notched a total of 51 goals in all competitions this season.

On top of his impressive tally in the Premier League, the Norwegian also has 12 goals in eight appearances in the Champions League, three in three in the FA Cup and one goal in two Carabao Cup outings.

Perhaps his most impressive display came during City’s 7-0 demolition of RB Leipzig earlier in their Champions League campaign, where he managed to score five goals.

He became just the second player in the competition’s history, after Lionel Messi, to achieve the accolade.

The Norwegian forward joined Manchester City from Dortmund for £51million in the summer transfer window.

He immediately hit the ground running and bagged a brace on Premier League debut, as City cruised to a 2-0 victory over West Ham.

He’s gone to record four hat-tricks in that time during City’s wins against Crystal Palace, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United.

On top of his efficiency in-front of goal, the Norwegian international has also managed to contribute six assists to his City team-mates this season.
