Sydney has been slammed as ‘tacky, sad and desperate’ for claiming its Everest Race is better than the Melbourne Cup because it has more prize money on offer.

A back-page advert in national broadsheet The Australian on the morning of the Melbourne Cup boasted about Sydney holding the world’s richest turf race.

The full-page spread was coupled with a story in Sydney-based The Daily Telegraph proudly bragging about the ‘real race that stops the nation.’

Social media users were quick to blast the publications for trying to ‘buy class’ and comparing the two races based solely on prize money.

‘Sydney mentality: more money means it must be better. Melbourne mentality says 150+ years of tradition stands for something,’ tweeted Paul Nolan.

‘You can’t buy class. Not even with the winners cheque for The Everest,’ added Roger Oldridge.

‘Sydney: There’s no rivalry. We don’t even care about Melbourne! *Runs full page ad claiming the Everest is bigger than Melbourne Cup,’ wrote Richard Hinds.

Others pointed out that The Everest had only run for one year, compared with the Melbourne Cup which first began in 1861.

‘Melbourne Cup’s appeal is the history and culture of the great race. Everest is a shabby, undignified attempt which will never match it,’ tweeted Nick McCallum.

The Everest is the richest race in Australia, with prize money of $10 million in its debut year and plans to boost its winnings to $13 million in 2018.

Melbourne Cup offers just $6.2 million in prize money.
