Thousands of Australian mothers are transforming their homes on a tight budget with tips and tricks, aptly nicknamed ‘Kmart hacks’.
Crafty parents are using cheap items from the budget department store to revolutionise second-hand products or completely re-purpose homeware with simple techniques.
One mother, from Tamworth in regional NSW, shared her clever Kmart hack online which transformed her dingy old fridge into an enviable appliance for only $5.

Gypsy Hughes used $5 copper adhesive film and tape to completely transform her old fridge
Gyspy Hughes shared her impressive work to the Facebook group, Kmart Mums Australia, after ‘upcycling’ a fridge she found at a garage sale by plastering it with a few rolls of copper adhesive film and tape.
Her finished product was a stunning rose-gold coloured fridge which had been completely changed from an old run-down piece of junk into a sparkling and expensive-looking kitchen appliance.
The crafty mother admitted her handiwork took about half a day and two people to completely re-wrap the fridge – but she said it was ‘worth it’.
Gypy’s creation attracted an enormous response from thousands of fellow Kmart connoisseurs who applauded her for her ingenious transformation.
And she is not the first mother to gain ‘Kmart hack’ fame online – with dozens of parents sharing their own artful transformations on social media every day.

Maggie spent a grand total of $3 at Kmart on ‘White Woodgrain Adhesive Vinyl’ and her finished product looked like a totally brand-new wooden table
Fellow Kmart Mums Australia member, Maggie Rue, followed a similar method and covered her old glass outside table in adhesive vinyl from Kmart to give it an expensive wood-grain look.
Maggie spent a grand total of $3 at Kmart on ‘White Woodgrain Adhesive Vinyl’ and her finished product looked like a totally brand-new wooden table.
Other beautifully patterned adhesives available at the department store used in similar hacks include black and white marble.
And Fallon Anderson-Barr impressed with her own Kmart hack by creating budget pendant lights in her dining room with wire bins.
Fallon improvised and attached $4 Kmart bins as lampshades to her hanging lights to protect the bulbs and create a stylish look for her modern dining area.

‘I bought one for my son’s room didn’t really think it through… it holds nothing unless you put a liner then it’s ugly lol. Much nicer as a lamp shade,’ one woman commented.
Kmart fanatic Carmen Mulvey also received praise online for devising a simple shoe rack for her boot collection out of a wooden Kmart towel rack.
Carmen used the $25 ‘Towel Rail with Bamboo Frame’ and S-shaped hooks to hang her shoes and keep them nice and tidy without spending a fortune.
Countless women have attracted viral success online for sharing their own Kmart hacks.
Other notable creations include a woman sewing two cheap $25 dresses together to make one stunning Melbourne Cup frock and another mother who made a floating bath-time device for her newborn out of a $3 pool noodle and an old Kmart pillowcase.
