Summer will soon be upon us.

And although many of us will be spending our days lounging outdoors, if you need to seek shelter from the sun – what can you expect to be on TV screens?

Whether you are a fan of drama, horror or sci-fi, the upcoming roster of releases has something for everyone. 

Here, FEMAIL has set out all the upcoming shows set to thrill viewers throughout June, July and August that you don’t want to miss out on.

June 4: The Idol

HBO’s The Idol follows a pop star named Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp), who suffered a nervous breakdown on her last tour and is now determined to reclaim her place as the greatest – and sexiest – icon.

Her passions are reignited by Tedros (The Weeknd), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past who is also the leader of a bizarre cult.

The official series description asks: ‘Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?’

Before it debuts on HBO on June 4, The Idol will premiere out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. 

According to sources, programmers at Cannes, one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, have not yet settled on whether to show two or three episodes of the six-part show. 

Production has been plagued with chaotic shoots but sources previously denied claims that the show’s budget had ballooned to $80 million, arguing the reshoots were nowhere near that expensive while speaking to TMZ.

June 8: Never Have I Ever (Season Four)

Netflix smash hit Never Have I Ever is set to return this summer.

But it will be bittersweet for fans with the series being its fourth and final installment.

The excited teenagers are set to make their return to embark on their drama-filled senior year – complete with a very interesting new love triangle.

The trailer for the show, created by Mindy Kaling, picked up right where the story left off in the season three finale with main protagonist Devi doing the deed for the first time with Ben. 

Devi, played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, continues navigating her strenuous love life all while getting ready to graduate high school and preparing to head off to college. 

The series, which promises ‘a banging ending,’ will premiere on June 8. 

June 8: Based on a True Story

Peacock’s upcoming new series Based on a True Story – which is actually fictional – is set to reach our screens next month.

Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman all star in the comedy drama which was created by producer Craig Rosenberg.

The show, which is set in Los Angeles, follows an unlikely trio of a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber.

The group, who are brought together by their love of true crime, take their fascination over an active serial killer to extremes.

Rosenberg previously teased viewers with a statement that read: ‘Over the last decade, a true crime phenomenon has swept over America. 

‘Podcasts, documentaries, fictional shows based on true stories – they dominate the culture. Murderers have become celebrities and celebrities have become murderers which inspired me to create this show.’

June 9: The Crowded Room

Apple TV is set to release its star-studded series The Crowded Room, set in 1979, in June.

Heading up the cast is Tom Holland as Danny Sullivan – an antisocial young man who is arrested after being mistaken for the culprit involved in a shooting in New York City.

According to the synopsis, ‘an unlikely investigator must solve the mystery behind it before the true criminal strikes again.’

Sir David Attenborough fans will be treated to his calming narrations once again this summer as docuseries Our Planet makes its return.

The Netflix show, which is set to air on June 14, will span across four 50-minute episodes.

It will undoubtedly deliver yet more breathtaking cinematography that gets viewers up close and personal with the natural world.

The Netflix show focusing on animal migration, which is set to air on June 14, will span across four 50-minute episodes

June 15: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Season Two)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will unveil its 10-episode second season on June 15 on Paramount+.

The prequel series follows Captain Kirk’s predecessor – Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) – as he undertakes missions around the galaxy for Starfleet.

Each episode tells a standalone story as the crew of the USS Enterprise travel through the 23rd century.

Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin are all confirmed to return for season seven.

Matthew B. Roberts will take up his role once again as executive producer alongside series creator Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Andy Harries, and Jim Kohlberg.

In January, it was confirmed that Outlander has also been renewed for an eighth and final season to bring the love story to a close.

June 18: The Walking Dead: Dead City

AMC’s The Walking Dead: Dead City series will see show favorites Lauren Cohan and Jeffre Dean Morgan reprise their roles as Maggie Greene and Negan.

Following the end of The Walking Dead, which aired the finale episode in November  2022, the duo lead the new cast as they travel into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan that has been cut off from the mainland in search of Maggie’s kidnapped son.

And with the zombie apocalypse still raging, the crumbling city is filled with ‘the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.’

The unusual pairing of Maggie with Negan seems contentious given that the totalitarian, sociopathic leader of the Saviors brutally killed Maggie’s husband Glenn in a jaw-dropping moment of the show.

There are two other new spin-offs involving characters from the original Walking Dead show in the pipeline.

One is The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, starring Norman Redus as the titular character, and the other is an untitled series featuring Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira).

June 21: Secret Invasion

Marvel’s Secret Invasion mini series will premiere on Disney+ on June 21.

The Nick Fury-centered show was teased during the end credits of Spider-Man: Far From Home – and has finally come to fruition.

In the series, ‘Fury (Samuel Jackson) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) try to stop the Skrulls who have infiltrated the highest spheres of the Marvel Universe.’

June 22: The Bear (Season Two)

The first series of The Bear proved to be a huge success when it ‘exceeded our wildest creative, critical and commercial expectations,’ FX entertainment head Eric Schrier said at the time.

And the hit show will now return to Hulu for its second installment on June 22.

The first series focused on young chef, Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), who leaves his career in a fine dining restaurant to return to his family owned sandwich shop after the death of a loved one.

But it has now been saved by HBO and will be making its return nearly three years after season two aired.

The action-packed hit is set in San Francisco – the location of America’s oldest and largest Chinatown – during the Tong Wars of the late 1800s.

And the series will continue to follow the original band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors.

July 7: The Horror of Dolores Roach

The Horror of Dolores Roach, which is based on the hit Gimlet podcast of the same name, is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale.

The plot sees the protagonist released from prison after 16 years to discover that the world has changed significantly.

She ‘finds respite by working as a massage therapist in the basement of an empanada shop, run by her old stoner buddy, Luis,’ according to IMDb.

Apple TV will air the second season of murder-mystery sitcom The Afterparty on July 12.

A top-flight cast has been assembled for the upcoming installment including series newcomers Ken Jeong, Zach Woods and Vivian Wu.

The first series saw the eponymous afterparty take place following a high school reunion which turned out to be the site of a murder.

It was axed by HBO just as it was preparing to wrap production on its second season.

But, fortunately, Starz has since stepped in, meaning that the latest installment will still reach viewers when it premieres on July 21.

New sci-fi drama Twisted Metal is set to premiere on Peacock on July 27.

The plot centers on John Doe (played by The Avengers star Anthony Mackie) – a fast-talking milk-man who has to deliver a mysterious package to get a chance at a better life.

August 3: Heartstopper (Season Two)

The first season of the heart-warming LGBTQ+ coming-of-age show was released in April 2022 to critical acclaim – launching stars Kit Connor (Nick) and Joe Locke (Charlie) into the limelight.

And fans will now only have to wait until August for the second installment of the show, which is based on the comic works of author Alice Oseman.

Netflix previously said of the new season: ‘Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges; Tao and Elle work out if they can ever be more than just friends. Plus there’s exams, a school trip to Paris, and prom!’

August 8: Only Murders in the Building (Season Three)

The Only Murders in the Building series is set at a New York City apartment complex entitled The Arconia.

It is home to neighbors Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), a well-known actor from a 1990s crime drama series, Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), a Broadway director, and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), an artist living alone in her aunt’s apartment.

After a chance meeting in the building’s elevator, they learn they share a love of true crime stories, and when a murder happens in their building, they team up to solve it.

August: Star Wars: Ahsoka

Last month, the highly-anticipated first trailer for Ahsoka was released with Rosario Dawson taking up the titular role as one of the last Jedi in the Star Wars Galaxy.

Rosario portrays Ahsoka Tano who is the exiled Jedi Padawan of Anakin Skywalker, who eventually turned to the Dark Side to lead the Galactic Empire as Darth Vader. 

The trailer appears to show that the live action series directly follows up on several threads from the animated series Star Wars Rebels.
