Most popular baby names in NSW revealed: Noah knocks Oliver from number one, Charlotte top for girls

Top baby names have been revealed with one boy’s moniker falling off the top spot for the first time in eight years – while one remains popular for the girls. 

New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages revealed the ten most popular baby names given to Aussie kids in the state in 2022 with Noah and Charlotte coming out on top. 

Oliver had held the number one spot for the boys since 2014 but has finally lost its reign and was bumped down to second place by Noah.

Charlotte climbed two places to be the most popular baby girl’s name however it has held a place in the top three since 2012.

2021’s favourite girl’s name Olivia had its popularity dwindle with Aussie parents dropping from number one down to number four in the space of a year. 

Jack has danced around the top ten since 2010 but in 2022 dropped from third place to sixth between 2021 and 2022. 

Isla has climbed the ranks making a debut in the top ten in 2016 and holds the number three position.

William is one boy’s name that is lasting generations having been in the top five since 2010 and making second place a century ago in 1922. 

Leo shot up from sixth to third place on the boy’s list while Theodore jumped from eighth to sixth.

Newcomers to the top ten include Willow and Sienna for the girls and Charlie for the boys while Thomas made its way back onto the list for the first time since 2020.

In the top 100, Remy rocketed to the 78th spot with with 100 baby boys taking the name compared to just 23 girls.

However the same name spelled Remi was given to 161 girls in 2022 making 38th place in the top 100. 

Similarly, Billie made 37th spot for the girls and Billy came in 69th for the boys. 

Riley ranked for both genders coming in on the girl’s list at 77th and 58th on the boys’. 

Joshua dropped 27 places for the boys and Lara 24 spots for the girls between 2021 and 2022.

Classic names like Grace, Evelyn, Jack and Henry ranked within the top 20 in both 2022 and 100 years prior in 1922. 

NSW Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib said picking a baby name can be a daunting task for parents and a once-in-a-lifetime decision forming a child’s identity and creating a connection to family, community and culture. 

‘While there are so many special and culturally significant names starting to appear in the top 100, there were also almost 11,000 bubs given an unrepeated name in 2022,’ he added. 

Blacktown and Dubbo recorded the most births in 2022 with 718 and 608 respectively while Auburn and Orange where just behind with 537 and 513. 

Oran Park saw the highest jump in births with a 90 per cent increase in babies born since 2012.
