Video shows Airbus engine on fire at Seattle airport

  • Engine of an Airbus A330 caught on fire after landing at airport Tuesday night
  • The Hawaiian Airlines ferry flight was not carrying any passengers at the time
  • Officials said it’s believed that either the left or right engine experienced an issue
  • No one was injured and the Federal Aviation Administration is still investigating

The frightening moment an Airbus A330 engine burst into flames after it landed at a Seattle airport was caught on video Tuesday night.

In the video, the Hawaiian Airlines ferry flight was seen taxiing on the tarmac at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport when the engine caught on fire.

Stunned passengers in a nearby terminal captured the incident on video and posted it on Twitter.

Once the plane came to a stop, it appeared the pilot shut off the engine, causing the fire to subdue until fire crews arrived.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the Hawaiian Airlines ferry Flight 875 was traveling from Paine Field, Washington, to SeaTac Washington, according to CBS News.

Ferry flights occur when a flight crew returns an aircraft to a base, deliver a new aircraft from its place of manufacture to its customers or from a maintenance facility for repairs, overhaul or other work.

There were no passengers on the flight, just the flight crew members. Hawaiian Airlines said the plane ‘experienced a left engine issue on final approach’ at the airport.

‘A left engine fire reported upon landing was extinguished by the aircraft fire extinguishing system and local fire officials.’

But the FAA told CBS that the aircraft ‘experienced a right engine flyer fire upon landing. The fire had already been extinguished by the time Fire crews arrived at the aircraft.’

An airport spokesman told CBS that there were no issues or alarms when the aircraft was in the air. It’s believed the problem was a compressor stall, which is similar to a car backfiring.

The spokesman said the incident happened on the ground after the plane landed.

No one was injured in the incident and the FAA is still investigating.
