First-time drug taker dies after taking ecstasy in Bristol

A teenager died after taking ‘high-potency’ ecstasy for the first time during a night out with friends.

Drake Morgan-Baines, 19, collapsed after swallowing the party drug with a Tesla-logo while partying in a Bristol nightclub.

His devastated mother Sheleen Morgan, 40, now wants to warn others that one pill of MDMA – also known as ecstasy – is enough to kill.

She said: ‘Hospital staff told us it was high-potency MDMA and, because it was the first time he had taken any, it was too powerful for him.

‘He got unlucky as his body couldn’t cope. One pill is enough to be in the same position we are in. We have been left in total devastation.’

Mr Morgan-Baines, an IT analyst from Newport, South Wales, was known by his friends as ‘Drizzy’ and was described as an ‘extreme loving, family man’.

His father, Roy Baines, 40, said that his son had a special relationship with his girlfriend, Megan Whitehead, 18.

He said: ‘Drake had a short stay in earth, but he had a very happy life. He had all the love in the world and had a beautiful girlfriend with whom he had a special relationship.’

Mr Morgan-Baines is believed to have taken a ‘Tesla’ ecstasy pill – which have been marked as potentially lethal.

He slipped into cardiac arrest after taking the pill in Motion nightclub in Bristol, and suffered from a brain seizure on November 5.

More than 100 people turned up outside the family home to set off fireworks in tribute to the teenager the day after he died.

His mother added: ‘We knew he was a very special boy – but this confirms that everybody else knew that as well.’

A spokeswoman for the club said: ‘We are deeply saddened to hear of the death and extend our deepest sympathy to his friends and family at this sad time.

‘In the early hours of Sunday morning he was brought to the medic room in Motion where he was treated immediately and an ambulance called. He sadly passed away at Bristol Royal Infirmary a few hours later.’

The hashtag #itsDrizzy was trending on social media and a fundraising page has been set up to cover the expense of his funeral.

Ecstasy, also known as MDMA or E, makes the user feel energized, happy, and alert for a number of hours.

The effect takes approximately half hour to kick in and can last for three to six hours.
