Meryl Streep lands cover of Vogue

Meryl Streep has done something her fans never thought she would ever be able to pull off.

She has landed on the cover of Vogue.

This is amazing not only because 20-year-old models like Kendall Jenner and not 68-year-old actresses usually grace the front of the fashion bible, but also because Streep played the magazine’s editor, Anna Wintour, in the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, only her character was named Miranda Priestly. And the portrayal was not flattering.

The Oscar winner was chosen for the December cover because she is playing the late Katharine Graham, publisher of The Washington Post, in Steven Spielberg’s new movie The Post.

On the cover Meryl looks angelic in a loose cream-colored blouse with her blonde hair falls down her shoulders.

The icon is also seen chatting with Wintour in her office, which is a very unusual image and one fans thought they would never seen.

In the inside feature Meryl does not speak much. The story is mostly about the movie The Post and Graham’s legacy.

Streep does say she admired Kay.

‘I am entranced by her energy, mind, grace, humor, and humility,’ Streep said to Vogue, ‘qualities in such short supply these days!’

Spielberg did not talk Streep: ‘What Katharine Graham and Ben Bradlee did all those years ago still reverberates today and in so many ways defined modern investigative journalism.’

This comes the day after the first trailer for The Post dropped. The film also stars Tom Hanks – this is the first movie Meryl and Tom have made together.

The Post, a journalistic drama set in the years following the Vietnam War, will be released on December 22.

Based on a true story, Streep stars as The Washington Post’s former publisher Kay, while Hanks plays editor Ben Bradlee.

The high-profile film is about The Washington Post’s race to secure and publish the classified Pentagon Papers in 1971, which exposed a government cover-up spanning decades.

The 7,000 pages revealed the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam war from 1945 to 1967.

The existence of the papers was originally discovered by The New York Times when they published excerpts in June 1971 under the headline Vietnam Archive: Pentagon Study Traces Three Decades Of US Involvement.

The movie chronicles Ben as he races to find the leaked Pentagon papers after the Times first published them.

The trailer details the fight they put up against the government for the right to publish after managing to secure the documents.

‘The way they lied. Those days have to be over,’ Ben says in the trailer, referring to the White House covering up the massive Vietnam war involvement.

‘What will happen if we don’t publish? We will lose. The country will lose.’

Followed by the pointed question: ‘What are you going to do Ms. Graham?’

The trailer starts with Tom’s character revealing to Kay that he can obtain the leaked Pentagon papers for The Washington Post.

‘Can I ask you a hypothetical question?’ he asks her privately during the start of the trailer.

‘Oh dear I don’t like hypothetical questions,’ Kay responds.

Tom’s character Ben then tells her: ‘Well I don’t think you’ll like the real one either.’

She point blank asks him: ‘Do you have the papers?’ to which he reveals ‘not yet.’

The film also delves into sexism with Meryl’s character being the first female publisher of a major US newspaper.

Spielberg directed and co-produced the film. The script was written by Liz Hannah and Amy Pascal served as co-producer.

In addition to Meryl and Tom, The Post also stars Sarah Paulson, Alison Brie, Matthew Rhys, Tracy Letts and Bob Odenkirk.

Streep and Hanks have been spotted at various points throughout the year filming the drama throughout New York in scenes at the Plaza Hotel and Columbia University.

While the two actors have never appeared on screen together, the duo have actually worked together before.

Hanks was a producer on the 2006 animated film The Ant Bully, which Meryl provided a voice for, and they also both appeared as themselves in the 2015 documentary about writer/filmmaker Nora Ephron, Everything Is Copy.

Tom was also a producer on Meryl’s 2008 smash Mamma Mia.

The Post will arrive in select theaters on December 22 with a wide release scheduled for January 12, 2018.
