Leicester hit-and-run driver reverses at speed into woman

This is the shocking moment a hit-and-run driver reversed at speed into a 20-year-old woman who was knocked 10ft down the road.

CCTV from a Co-op supermarket in Leicester shows the grey vehicle move backwards and hit the innocent woman.

Two men got out of the car, believed to a Renault, to look at the injured woman but the driver quickly got back in and reversed away.

Another man, believed to be the passenger, was spotted casually strolling away from the scene as worried bystanders sprinted over to the woman’s aid.

Pc Fiona White, from Leicestershire Police, who is investigating the incident, said: ‘We would like to speak to anyone who was in Briton Street that afternoon and who may have seen the collision take place.

‘It was Halloween and the CCTV shows that the area was busy at the time. We also want to speak to anyone who recognises the two people seen getting out of the car.

‘If you are one of those two men, clearly we need to speak to you as part of our investigation, and I ask you to come forward.’

Astonishingly the woman appears to have had a relatively lucky escape, as police described her injuries as ‘minor’.

Phillip Parker, landlord of the nearby Western pub, said: ‘I remember we were very busy when it happened and I didn’t actually see it.

‘But later on I saw the woman being taken away in an ambulance and someone who had helped her came in here and said that her leg was injured.

‘I’m not happy about something like this happening here – people reverse too quickly along there and there are often lots of people coming out of the park in big groups at that time of day.

‘They need to look properly where they’re going and they need to take more care.’

A 34-year-old local, who did not want to be named, said: ‘Hopefully they’ll catch the driver responsible because it was a really stupid thing to do.

‘Loads of people walk in the road because they spill out of the park there. You get lots of bikes as well and it’s a road where drivers have to be really careful.

‘I just hope the woman recovers okay.’
