Levi Colwill has been handed his first senior England call-up for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.

The Chelsea centre back, 20, excelled on loan at Brighton last season and replaces Seagulls captain Lewis Dunk, who has a back injury, in the squad. Colwill is still set to be part of the England Under 21s squad for the Euros this month.

The FA confirmed on Monday that the 20-year-old has now been called up to train with the senior side at St George’s Park.

Colwill’s promotion to senior training raises the possibility he could be involved in the England squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifying matches.

Southgate’s side are looking to maintain their perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying after beating Italy and Ukraine in March.

England face Malta on Friday, before hosting North Macedonia at Old Trafford next Monday.

Those fixtures come ahead of the start of the Under 21 European Championship, which begin in Romania and Georgia on June 21.

England’s opening match of the tournament falls on June 22, when Lee Carsley’s side face the Czech Republic.

The Under 21s have also been drawn against Germany and Israel in the group stage of the tournament.

Colwill’s call-up to senior England training follows Dunk’s withdrawal from the Three Lions squad due to injury, with the Brighton defender suffering from a back and rib problem.

Colwill enjoyed a productive loan spell at Brighton alongside Dunk, with the Chelsea academy starlet making 22 appearances in all competitions as the Seagulls qualified for Europe for the first time.

Brighton are weighing up whether to launch an improved bid in the region of £40m for Colwill after seeing an offer of £30m rejected by Chelsea.

The Blues are adamant that Colwill will not leave this summer.

His Chelsea contract runs until 2025 and contains an appearance-related optional 12 months.
