Kate Middleton puts on an elegant display as she attends Trooping the Colour in all-green outfit

The Princess of Wales put on an elegant display in green as she attended the Trooping the Colour celebrations today.

Kate Middleton, 41, was snapped waving at bystanders as she made her way to the event.

Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, also joined Kate on the Buckingham Palace balcony alongside King Charles, 74 and Queen Camilla, Prince William and other working royals.

It is the first Trooping the Colour the royal family marks without the late Queen Elizabeth II following her death last September.

Last year’s celebrations marked 70 since the late Monarch’s ascension to the throne, but this year’s heralds a new era for the family, with King Charles at its helm.

Kate looked stylish as she joined other senior members of The Firm for the historic event today.

The princess opted for a bold single colour look, donning green from head-to-toe, representing her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards – a role she took over from her husband at the end of last year.

Around 70 aircraft from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force will take part in a flypast for Trooping the Colour on Saturday, marking the first birthday flypast for Charles.

However, the extended military flypast may be scaled down due to bad weather.

The King, Queen and other members of the royal family are expected to watch as the aircraft fly over The Mall and Buckingham Palace in a six-minute display.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the aircraft will take off from 15 locations up and down the UK before meeting in the south-east of England and flying across London.

The event will feature a mix of aircraft, ranging from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight dating back to the 1940s and the C-130 Hercules on its final ceremonial flight to multiple Typhoon fighter jets and the Envoy IV CC1, which is making its flypast debut.

At the front of the flypast will be a Juno HT1 piloted by Flight Lieutenant Tom Knapp from 60 Squadron, No 1 Flying Training School based at RAF Shawbury.

The event will end in a show of red, white and blue from the pilots of the Red Arrows.

Today’s event marked the first Trooping the Colour with King Charles as monarch, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September

The MoD said many of the aircraft taking part in the flypast have been involved in operations around the world this year, including the Nato air policing mission in Eastern Europe and the evacuation of British citizens from Sudan.

Charles will be joined on Saturday by the Queen and members of the royal family to view the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards Troop their Colour.

The annual event of Trooping the Colour has marked the official birthday of the sovereign for more than 260 years.

More than 60 aircraft from the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force had been due to take part in the coronation flypast in May but ‘unsuitable weather conditions’ saw that plan abandoned.

Instead, helicopters from the three services and the Red Arrows took part in the display, which lasted for around two and a half minutes.

Footage from Royal Navy helicopters showed how poor the weather was in the skies above London.

What is Trooping the Colour?

The Trooping the Colour ceremony takes place to celebrate the birthday of the reigning monarch in the UK and has been held every year for the past 260 years.

This year, the display will take place on Saturday June 17. It will feature the King’s personal troops, the Household Division – who will be situated on Horse Guards Parade – with the King himself set to attend and take salute.

The popular event will attract big crowds, who will be seen waving flags as the parade moves from Buckingham Palace and down The Mall to Horse Guard’s Parade, alongside Members of the Royal Family on horseback and in carriages.

Some 113 words of command will be given by the Officer in Command of the Parade. The parade route extends from Buckingham Palace along The Mall to Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and back again.

During the ceremony, Charles will be greeted by a royal salute, before carrying out an inspection of the troops, who are fully trained and operational soldiers wearing the ceremonial uniform of red tunics and bearskin hats.

After the massed bands have performed a musical ‘troop’, the escorted Regimental Colour is carried down the ranks.

The Foot Guards and the Household Cavalry will march past His Majesty, The King’s Troop and the Royal Horse Artillery. Subsequently, the King shall ride back to Buckingham Palace at the head of his Guards, before taking the salute at the Palace.

His Majesty will then join other members of the Royal Family on the palace balcony for a fly-past by the Royal Air Force.

Rain streaked the windshields of the aircraft as they flew low over the heart of the capital.

The MoD said the birthday flypast has been increased in size to pay tribute to the new monarch.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, said: ‘We are very proud to be able to showcase our capabilities to our Commander-in-Chief, on this historic occasion for his majesty the King.

‘We have planned a fitting and appropriate tribute for our monarch, that should be a true spectacle for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.’

Air Officer Commanding 1 Group, Air Vice-Marshal Mark Flewin, said: ‘It is a great honour to be part of his majesty the King’s birthday celebrations, where the flypast is an opportunity for us to showcase formation, precision and excellence in the air to our Commander-in-Chief on such a special occasion.’
