Kelly Clarkson reveals she ‘knew’ that her marriage with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock was ending

Kelly Clarkson opened up about her divorce with Brandon Blackstock on Wednesday.

During an episode of The Zane Lowe Show, the 41-year-old singer-songwriter revealed that she ‘knew in [her] heart’ that her marriage with the television producer, 46, was coming to an end.

While promoting her upcoming album Chemistry, the daytime talk show host revealed she and her now-ex were going to couples counseling and ‘trying to make it work’.

However, the American Idol winner — who recently detailed the worst part of her divorce — realized ‘it just wasn’t going to’ before they inevitably split in 2020 after seven years of marriage.

The former couple share daughter — River, nine — and son — Remington, seven. 

Blackstock is also father to son Seth and daughter Savannah from his previous marriage to Melissa Ashworth.

‘I desperately want to make this happen,’ she recalled feeling at the time. ‘But I think I knew in my heart it just wasn’t going to.’ 

She also opened up about her feelings and going through dark periods after the divorce.

Throughout the ‘shitty’ grieving process, she recalled feeling like she was on a ‘rollercoaster’ of emotions.

With the help of a therapist, however, she was able to overcome the difficult time. 

‘It’s very helpful to have a trained professional that knows how to kind of navigate you through rough seas,’ she explained. 

Since the split, she has openly talked about how their family dynamic has shifted.

During an episode of IRL released in March, Clarkson spoke to podcast host Angie Martinez about how her children often feel ‘really sad’ about their parents living separately.

‘I just sit there, and I’m like, “I get it. I’m from a divorced family as well. I get it. That sucks, you know? But we’re going to work it out. And you are so loved by both of us”,’ she said on the show.

Previously, Clarkson and her ex-husband met at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards in May 2006. 

In December 2012, the pair got engaged and tied the knot in October 2013. 

In 2020, she filed for divorce from the music manager, and it was finalized officially two years later in 2022.
