‘To be able to play he is given almost daily injections and special treatments, he feels constant pain. The thing is serious’.
Suarez has had long-running problems with his knee and was sidelined for 149 days after undergoing surgery during his time at Barcelona.
The 36-year-old, despite his injury problems, has still managed to score 11 goals and record eight assists during his outings for the Brazilian side.
He also helped the club claim the Campeonato Gaúcho 2023 title after a 2-1 aggregate victory over Caxias RS, where Suarez scored one of his team’s goals.
Prior to joining Gremio at the start of the year, Suarez had been playing for boyhood club Nacional in the Uruguayan Primera División.
During his six-month stint at the club, he managed to score eight goals in 16 games and helped them clinch a league title.
Suarez called an end to his time in Europe after leaving Atletico Madrid in 2022. He’d spent two years in Madrid and was part of the side that won LaLiga in 2020-21.
Prior to that he’d spent six years at Barcelona and four years at Liverpool – where he scored 280 goals in 416 games combined.

News of Suarez’s potential retirement comes just days after reports that former Sunderland star Asamoah Gyan will also be hanging up his boots.
Gyan and Suarez were infamously involved in one of the most incredible finishes to a World Cup match after their encounter in 2010.
Suarez controversially kept the ball out of Uruguay’s goal with his hands in the final moments of the game and was sent off – leaving him in tears.
Ghana’s Gyan stepped up but missed the spot-kick and, eventually, Uruguay triumphed on the night.
