Paul Scholes admits he is ‘surprised’ no big clubs are interested in Aston Villa star

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes admits he is ‘surprised’ no big clubs are interested in Aston Villa star who scored in England U21s win over Czech Republic

Paul Scholes has admitted being ‘surprised’ at the lack of interest from Premier League clubs in one of England’s brightest young talents.

The 22-year-old midfielder was named recently named Aston Villa’s young player of the season for the second year running after netting six league goals.

He has also impressed at the start of England Under 21s Euros campaign, netting the opener against the Czech Republic as the Young Lions won their first game of the tournament 2-0.

Scholes posted a picture of the midfielder on Instagram after the game with the caption ‘surprised no big clubs are coming in for this lad!’

Despite playing as a number eight, the starlet has scored four goals in just 13 games for England U21s and has become a key player in Lee Carsley’s side.

The player in question is Jacob Ramsey, who played a big part in Villa’s turnaround last season under Unai Emery that saw them qualify for the Europa Conference League.

Ramsey has played for Villa since he was six years old, which may explain why there are no big clubs after him, and is currently under contract at the club until 2027.

Before he returns to the midlands, he will be hoping to secure a first England win in the Under 21s Euros since 1984.

He seemed confident before the tournament, telling Sportsmail’s Jack Gaughan:  ‘One thing that I will say about this group – when we’ve looked at previous groups before, and previous camps, there’s probably a different mentality.

‘In this group we’ve got a bit of humble side. I think everyone knows how well we can play together, and we probably are one of the favourites. But we will go into this tournament respecting every team.

‘I feel like we’ve got the right balance and, hopefully, when we go out there we will show that.’

England U21s will next be in action against Israel on Sunday as they look to continue their 100% start to the tournament.
