ALVISE CAGNAZZO: Juventus-bound USA star Timothy Weah could be Angel Di Maria’s heir… he is nothing like his father George but he can have the same legacy in Italian football
- Weah is reportedly on the verge of joining Juventus for just over £10million
- His father, George, won the Ballon d’Or in 1995 while playing for AC Milan
- Weah Jnr is not known for his goals but his aggressive and attacking intent
Italian football is preparing to welcome Timothy Weah, the son of the great George – who won the Ballon d’Or winner while at AC Milan.
Weah is about to sign a five-year agreement with Juventus. According to Sky Sport, the Old Lady has reached an agreement with both the player and Lille and the deal will be done soon.
The purchase of yet another young player shows Juventus’ willingness to invest in millennials in the hope that they can become the stars of a new cycle of success that will see a return to winning national and international trophies.
Weah Jnr has an outstanding physique, great physical stamina and a very high dribbling ability. The former Celtic man will soon become the second American player in the history of Juventus, fulfilling the dream of his father George, who has always been a black and white fan.
Lille will reportedly receive just over £10million from Juventus. Playing under Massimiliano Allegri and his staff will improve a potentially top player who could dominate the international scene in the coming years.
Juventus are set to confirm the signing of Timothy Weah for a little over £10million
He will become the second ever American to play for Juventus as the club turns to youth to help them achieve success again
He will be hoping to have a similar legacy in Italian football to father George, who won the Ballon d’Or while at AC Milan in 1995
The injured Mattia de Sciglio, who will not return before 2024, and the farewell of Juan Cuadrado, whose contract expiring on 30 June will not be renewed, leaves Juventus short of right wingers, and Weah will probably start his career in Italy with more defensive role.
He is, however, a very different player to his father. Weah Jnr played 29 games for Lille last year, often used as a right-back in a four-man defence, just like Cuadrado.
Just like the Colombian full-back, Weah has a lot of aggression and finds it easy to run forward into attacking spaces. The American has great flexibility, which allows him to also play as a winger in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.
Juve boss Max Allegri will likely use Weah at right-back, but he can also play as a winger
Weah Snr has always been a fan of Juventus, so his won’s move will have made him proud
But Weah is not a footballer who scores a lot of goals. He’s clocked only six goals in the last four seasons in Ligue 1, but he certainly has his strengths.
Unlike his father, George isn’t known for finding the net a lot, despite starting his career as a centre-forward. He loves to play on the right and to take advantage of the great acceleration he has.
In a 3-5-2, he will play in the role that Cuadrado played for many years, but also in the 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 he could become a fundamental player to guarantee balance and quality, covering around eight miles in each game he plays.
Weah, who is leaving Lille after a great season, could also fill the role of a winger, becoming Angel di Maria’s heir. It’s a position he occupied both in his early years at Lille and at last year’s World Cup with the United States.
