Boy, 2, shoots pregnant mother in the back with pistol he found in nightstand

Ohio boy, 2, shoots his pregnant mother, 31, in the back with pistol he found in nightstand: Mom and baby both died after emergency C-section

  • Laura Ilg, 31, was shot dead when her toddler son began playing with a handgun while she was doing laundry
  • The mother, who was eight months pregnant, was rushed to hospital but an emergency c-section couldn’t save her or her unborn child
  • In a heartbreaking tribute, her husband Alek, 28, said: ‘There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. She was, is, and will always be, the love of my life’

A two-year-old boy shot his pregnant mother in the back with a pistol he found in her nightstand, killing her and her unborn child.

Police in Norwalk, Ohio rushed to the scene on June 16 after receiving a frantic call from the mother, Laura Ilg, 31, moments after she was shot in the back.

Her Marine husband Alek, 28, who was at work at the time, also called dispatchers, telling them he ‘received a phone call from his wife “screaming something about my son and needing to call 911″‘, cops said.

Ilg was rushed to nearby Fisher-Titus Medical Center, where surgeons performed an emergency cesarean section but they were unable to save the baby. Ilg was tragically declared dead around three hours later.

In a heartbreaking tribute, Laura’s husband Alek wrote on social media: ‘There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. She was, is, and will always be, the love of my life.’

Officers arrived at the house and made a forced entry through the locked front door, where they found Ilg and her son upstairs in the master bedroom.

She said the room is typically locked and baby gates are set up throughout the home, but her son bypassed the gates and started playing with the gun while she was doing laundry.

At the request of Ilg the 2-year-old was removed from the bedroom, and paramedics then performed desperate lifesaving procedures.

She was said to be ‘fully conscious’ and provided a ‘complete account of the events that occurred’, explaining that she was 33 weeks pregnant

An online obituary for the mom says she ‘enjoyed attending her church and spending time with her family. She met her husband, Alek, while he was in the Marines, and married Nov. 23, 2018.’

‘She always wanted to be a mother and wife… She was an avid reader and especially liked Harry Potter, crafting, and enjoyed board games and was a child at heart,’ the tribute added.

A sweep of the house uncovered the weapon, along with a shell casing, while the handgun’s magazine was filled with an additional 12 rounds, police said.

Investigators also found two more firearms inside the home, a 12-guage shotgun in the master bedroom closet, and an airsoft rifle in the computer room closet.

The Norwalk Police Department’s detective bureau, which executed a search warrant on the home, says it found a number of child safety features in the home, including gates on almost all doorways and child locks on drawers.

Investigations into the shooting are ongoing, and no charges have yet been filed.
