Liverpool and Boston Red Sox owner FSG buy a team in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Sports golf league in a big boost after PGA Tour’s shock merger with LIV
Liverpool FC and Boston Red Sox owners Fenway Sports Group have bought a team to compete in the golf league being set up by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
It comes at a significant time for Woods and McIlroy, who unveiled plans for the league, called TMRW (pronounced ‘Tomorrow’) in partnership with the PGA Tour in response to the unpopular LIV Golf.
But earlier in June, the PGA Tour sent shockwaves across the world of sport by announcing plans to merge with the Saudi-backed breakaway tour.
John Henry and Tom Werner, who also own NHL team Pittsburgh Penguin, said in a statement on Monday: ‘We are excited for this new journey.
‘Through this new, tech-focused version of the game, New England sports fans will soon have a team of world-class PGA Tour players to cheer for and redefine for this community what it means to play the game in the modern era.’

Mike McCarley, co-founder of TMRW Sports alongside the star golfers, added: ‘The team at FSG is uniquely positioned to help build an expanding community for fans of golf and embracing that audience is foundational to the Boston’s TGL team’s mission.’
FSG join Serena Williams in having a team. The tennis star was announced as an owner of a Los Angeles team on June 8 alongside her husband, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, and her sister Venus.
TMRW Sports has a glittering away of star investors such as Shaquille O’Neal, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Josh Allen and Lewis Hamilton.
McIlroy and Woods were two of the PGA Tour’s leading voices in the fight against LIV’s influence in golf.
Woods rejected an offer of around $750m to join the tour, while McIlroy was far more vociferous and spoke of his ‘hatred’ of the event on numerous occasions.
