Shaun Wright-Phillips makes bold claim that Romelu Lukaku will return to Chelsea to partner Christopher Nkunku under Mauricio Pochettino
- Lukaku is stuck in limbo as Inter Milan cannot afford to sign him this summer
- Chelsea confirmed the signing of Nkunku last week as he joined from RB Leipzig
- Wright-Phillips believes that Lukaku and Nkunku could strike up a partnership
Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has made a bold claim that Romelu Lukaku will return to Stamford Bridge to partner Christopher Nkunku next season.
The France international was confirmed as Mauricio Pochettino’s first signing as he arrived from RB Leipzig.
And former Blues Wright-Phillips has told Metro that he believes Lukaku will return to play in attack with the 25-year-old.
‘Last season, (having no striker) was their biggest crime,’ he said. ‘Yes, they were losing matches and conceding goals, but it wasn’t that they weren’t making chances, it was that they weren’t scoring them. They need someone to put the ball in the back of the net and Rom is a striker.
‘Poch could get something out of him, maybe with Christopher Nkunku playing behind him.’

Wright-Phillips continued to state that the Blues will not get their money back on Lukaku, who is pushing for a move to Inter Milan.
He continued: ‘They’re never going to recoup what they paid for him and I don’t think he has any other options so I imagine he’ll be back.’
The Belgian has been linked with a move to Inter’s rivals, AC Milan, in recent days.
However, Lukaku has made it clear that he wishes to stay at Inter despite the Serie A side being unable to pay near to the fee that Chelsea signed him for two years ago.
He has also rejected a move to Saudi Arabia, with it unclear as to what the future holds for the forward.
Nkunku’s arrival could provide a lifeline for Lukaku if Wright-Phillips is right in his thinking, with Chelsea still searching for a number nine.
Nicolas Jackson is expected to be announced after a successful medical ahead of his move from Villarreal, but the 22-year-old is not the finished product that the Blues are looking for.
