- Manufacturer ZURU said children have been injured
An extremely popular bath toy sold in Australia and the United States has been recalled due to a risk of impalement, laceration and puncture injuries.
Manufacturer ZURU in cooperation with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 7.5million Baby Shark and Mini Baby Shark Bath Toys.
The ZURU Robotic Baby Shark toys are available in Australia from sellers including Amazon, Kmart, Ebay and CrazySales. Some sellers are currently offering discounted prices.
ZURU is recalling the Baby Shark bath toys as they have a hard and sharp plastic fin that has injured a number of children
The toys also have a mini version which is also recalled – sold in packs of one, two and three
The recall states that when used in a bath tub or wading pool, children can slip, fall or sit on the hard plastic top fin, which has a sharp point.
ZURU said it was aware of 12 reports of children getting injured due to the toys, nine of which required stitches or medical attention.
The full sized version measures about 18cm from nose to tail and are sold in packs of one or three, while the mini version measures about 12cm and is sold in packs of one, two or three as well as part of the Interactive Water Music Park Playset.
The toys are available in pink, blue, and yellow.
Product Safety Australia is yet to issue it’s own recall.
However, anyone who has bought the toys should stop using them immediately and contact ZURU via their website to report the product issue.
Since March 2023 the company has made a version with a soft silicone top fin, these are not recalled.
They are available in three colours. Since March 2023 an updated version with a soft silicone fin has been made
ZURU was founded by New Zealander Nick Mowbray and his brother when they were 18 and 22 respectively.
The pair setup a factory in Guangzhou, China in 2005 having little experience in the industry and not knowing the local language.
By 2015 ZURU was one of the largest toy companies in the world and by 2020 the company employed 8500 people, had 26 offices, and a turnover of over $1 billion.
Mowbray currently resides in Beverley Hills, California.
