Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic train together ahead of Wimbledon – 10 years after pair met in the final which saw the Brit secure his first of two SW19 titles

  • It comes ten years after the Brit defeated the Serbian in the singles final in SW19

Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have practiced together at Wimbledon, a decade after the pair met in the 2013 final which saw the Brit secure his first title at the slam.

Murray, the US Open Champion in 2012, came to SW19 with the weight of the nation on his shoulders, and despite stiff opposition from the Serbian, was able to win 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, to win Britain’s first gentleman’s singles title at the tournament for 77 years.

The pair joined forces for a workout ahead of this year’s edition of the grass court slam, which begins on Monday.

Mail Sport’s MIKE DICKSON shared an image of the training session, with the caption: ’10 years on from when they met in the final Novak Djokovic is practising at Wimbledon with Andy Murray.’

Djokovic has not let the defeat ten years ago hold him back, as he has gone to secure his record 23rd Grand Slam title by winning the French Open final in straight sets last month.

The 136th Championship begins on Monday, although the only way that they would meet for a 37th time at Wimbledon would be if both players held their nerve to reach the final.

As the reigning Wimbledon Champion, the Serbian will open Centre Court proceedings on Monday against the Argentinian player Pedro Cachin.

Murray sealed back-to-back grass court titles in the lead-up to Wimbledon, at Surbiton and Nottingham, and will face fellow Brit Ryan Peniston in the other half of the Wimbledon draw on Tuesday.

Ranked 267th in the world, Peniston almost crashed his car after discovering the fate of his draw on Friday.

It is only the second all-British tie that Murray has faced on the grass courts of Wimbledon – although his previous outing against Liam Broady was the Scot’s opening match on his route to win the title again in 2016.

Djokovic and Murray have met 36 times in total, with the Serbian claiming 25 wins in total. They are one of only two male pairs to have met each other in the finals of all four Grand Slams – with Nadal’s rivalry with Djokovic the only other one to have achieved the rare feat.
