Shopper issues warning to check your meat labels after his weekly supermarket trip
- Brendon, from Adelaide, purchased 1kg of beef mince from Woolworths
- The packet only weighed 496g on his kitchen scales at home
A shopper has warned all customers to double check the weight of their meat after a recent trip to the supermarket resulted in a labelling mishap.
Brendon, from Adelaide, purchased a 1kg pack of beef mince but soon realised there was only 496g of meat when he weighed the product.
The man immediately issued a warning about the missing 504g of mince and asked all other shoppers to keep an eye on the deli labels.
Brendon went back to Woolworths to return the product and checked the weight of several other products.
Woolworths sells beef mince in two different sized packets, and while many believed Brendon was the victim of an accidental misprint, he revealed that he grabbed the standard 1kg pack of meat.

Brendon posted photos of his undersized mince and shared his experience.
‘Weigh your meat,’ he said. Is this normal? I called Woolies and they just said to come in and they’ll replace it.’
‘It was in the bigger packet so I just assumed it’s 1kg,’ he added. ‘When I returned the mince, the deli grabbed four different packages and they were all different weighs.’
Brendon then said that Woolworths was investigating the situation.
Many shoppers revealed that they use the fruit and vegetable scales to check their groceries.
‘I weigh pre-packed items like strawberries and cherry tomatoes because you never know if someone has snuck one or two,’ a woman said. ‘It’s a good idea to do the same with your meat.’
‘I use the scales in the produce section to weigh everything before I buy it as I have noticed the tray is not as full sometimes. Quite a few were under weight and not many over 1kg,’ another said.

But others were still convinced the label was simply a misprint.
‘Pretty easy to see the wrong label has been used,’ a man said.
‘I’d say the wrong sticker was accidentally put on the package, no way that was on purpose,’ another said.
Several shoppers vowed to always check their food going forward.
‘Wow, I’ve never checked my meat by weight, I will now though,’ a woman said.
‘I noticed something off while cooking dinner tonight – like it didn’t seem like the ‘usual’ amount of mince but didn’t think to weigh it,’ another wrote.

A Woolworths spokesperson revealed that supermarket products are audited regularly and checked for their compliance to net weight requirements.
‘We want our customers to shop with the confidence they’re getting what they’re paying for. We’re aware of the customer’s claim and are looking into it with our suppliers,’ they told FEMAIL.
‘Our suppliers have a range of checks and balances in place to ensure our products comply with trade measurement requirements.
‘If ever our customers are concerned about the weight of a product, we’d encourage them to return it for a refund.’
