NRL commentator Dan Ginnane apologises for making ‘just plain dumb’ comment about SHOOTING Bulldogs star Hayze Perham in 66-0 loss to Knights

Fox League commentator Dan Ginnane has apologised for making a ‘plain dumb’ comment during the Bulldogs’ 66-0 shellacking at the hands of Newcastle on Sunday.

Calling the game on Triple M, Ginnane was scathing of Canterbury Hayze Perham’s struggles as the Knights ran in 11 unanswered tries.

‘If Hayze Perham was an animal you’d take him out the back and shoot him to put him out of his misery,’ he said.

On Monday, Ginnane apologised for his comments, which he described as ‘ill-conceived and silly’ in a post on Twitter.

‘Made a comment during yesterday’s Bulldogs v Newcastle game that was plain dumb,’ he wrote.

‘Deserve to cop a whack. Got carried away with the onslaught of tries, but the comment was ill conceived and just silly. No excuse.’

The Bulldogs were booed by their home crowd before spectators filed out of Accor Stadium in droves as Newcastle routed Cameron Ciraldo’s side 66-0 on Sunday.

The horror scoreline matched Canterbury’s 66-0 loss to Manly at Bankwest Stadium two years ago, with only an 87-7 submission to Eastern Suburbs in 1935 eclipsing those two losses.

Ciraldo, however, urged disillusioned fans to keep the faith despite the Bulldogs suffering the equal-worst defeat of their NRL history.

‘A very tough day. It’s not a great moment. It’s an embarrassing moment, it’s a disappointing moment. It’s not what you want,’

‘We knew things would be hard this year at different times but probably not this hard.

‘But it is what it is. Clubs go through these times, teams go through these times and it shows your real character and that’s what I’m interested in right now.’

Canterbury supremo Phil Gould took to Twitter to apologise for the shambolic performance.

‘An extremely poor performance from the Bulldogs,’ he tweeted.

‘No getting away from that fact… Knights way too good, and they played very well, but no excuse for that scoreline … Bulldogs found lacking in many facets of the game … Need to regroup and find a team for next weekend.’

Gould, however, insisted the club remained firmly behind Ciraldo, who has won just five games in his first season in charge of the Bulldogs and lost 11.

Despite watching the Bulldogs leak almost a dozen tries, Ciraldo ruled out making wholesale changes to the side to face South Sydney on Saturday.

‘This is a cultural thing that’s happened for years and years now – a habit of losing,’ he said.

‘We’re not going to look for short-term fixes or changes that might get us a little result next week.

‘We want to change the culture of the club.

‘We want to turn it into a winning culture and we’re starting to do that but we’re not seeing the results of it right now.’
