Acid attack fears as two women are splashed with substance

Two women have been hurt in a suspected acid attack during a brawl at an Essex shopping centre.

The two victims suffered stinging and reddening on their faces after being splashed with an unknown substance. 

Police and medics rushed to Lakeside Shopping Centre, in Thurrock, after a fight broke out at about 5.10pm.  

It then spilled over into a nearby McDonald’s, where staff were forced to intervene.

A 16-year-old boy from Romford and a 17-year-old boy from Dagenham have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.     

The women’s injuries are not believed to be serious.

Police put a cordon around the area and are currently investigating.   

Inspector Rob Brettell said: ‘I understand this incident may have caused concern but we believe it was a targeted and isolated incident and there is no risk to the wider public.

‘The area was busy at the time and I believe there would have been a lot of people who saw what happened.

‘If you saw what happened, have any video of it or have any other information my team needs to speak to you.’
