England make THREE changes for must-win third Ashes Test at Headingley – as Mark Wood, Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes come in and Jimmy Anderson is dropped

England have made three changes to the team beaten controversially at Lord’s as they gamble on an ultra-attacking line-up to try to get back into the Ashes.

Moeen Ali, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes all come into the England side for Thursday’s third Test at Headingley confirmed on Wednesday but there is no place for Essex batsman Dan Lawrence.

England vice-captain Ollie Pope was ruled out of the rest of the summer on Tuesday with the dislocation of his right shoulder suffered at Lord’s and Lawrence could have been a direct replacement at three.

But England have decided to promote Harry Brook up the order even though he struggled against the short ball at five and will be more exposed to Australian pace at three.

Moeen returns after missing the second Test with a finger injury sustained on his return to red-ball cricket in the first Test at Edgbaston and Wood makes his first Test appearance of the summer after finally clearing himself as ready to provide that extra pace.

Woakes also makes his first Test appearance for more than two years and will provide seam bowling proven in English conditions on what looks like a green Headingley pitch and can also provide much needed batting strength in the lower middle order.

England XI (v Australia at Headingley on Thursday): Duckett, Crawley, Brook, Root, Bairstow (keeper), Stokes, Moeen, Woakes, Wood, Robinson, Broad.
