Manchester United have upped their offer for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana to just under £43m.
After their first proposal worth up to £38.5m was not enough for Inter, United have returned with an improved bid for manager Erik Ten Hag’s No.1 target.
The latest approach is an initial £38.5m with just over £4m in add ons.
Inter had been holding out for around £45m and though United have not reached that mark there is a growing optimism a deal will be reached between the two clubs.
It would enable the Cameroon stopper to move to Old Trafford and be reunited with his former Ajax manager. Finalising Onana’s personal terms is not expected to be a formality.

Erik ten Hag worked with Onana for five years when the two were at Eredivisie giants Ajax
United’s goalkeeping situation is up in the air after long-term No.1 David de Gea was allowed to let his contract run down and expire.
He had been in talks over an extension on lower terms than his previous £375,000-per-week deal but, though an agreement at one stage appeared close, it remained unsigned and the Spaniard is currently without a club.
Reviving those talks was not being ruled out depending on the progress United make elsewhere in their attempts to bring in a new goalkeeper.
Dean Henderson has returned to the club after a loan spell at Nottingham Forest which ended prematurely due to injury.
Forest want to re-sign him, have been in regular contact and are in position to make that move happen quickly if he is give the green light to leave.
United have also considered signing cheaper alternatives to Onana due to their budget restrictions including Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow and Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp.
But they have prioritised a move for another of Ten Hag’s top choices after completing a £60m deal for midfielder Mason Mount this week.
