- Kmart Australia is set to close Port Adelaide store
- Locals are disappointed over the shock decision
Shoppers are disappointed and outraged over Kmart Australia’s shock decision to close one of its popular stores.
Over the ‘coming months’ the retailer will shutdown the Port Adelaide store in South Australia, with 100 employees set to be impacted.
A Kmart spokesperson told FEMAIL the retail giant will ‘continue to support the local community’ from nearby stores at West Lakes and Churchill Road as well as online.
Hundreds of customers voiced their thoughts on the matter in a Reddit thread.

‘What? It was the best one.. always had whatever you wanted in stock,’ one Redditor wrote.
‘Going to be a few unhappy older residents,’ another wrote and one person responded by saying: ‘I’m unhappy and I’m not even old!’
A fourth reflected on memories made at the Port Adelaide store and said: ‘That’s sad, I got fond memories of picking up my first game console (a Play Station 1) there as a kid!’
Both customers and employees were stunned by the decision, as one worker commented on the Reddit thread.
‘I work at Kmart and I got the call two days ago before they announced it saying that the store is closing in three months and that they’re looking to move people to different stores,’ the worker wrote.
‘I was shocked especially because that Kmart has been there before I was born, and I have so many memories there.’

A Kmart Australia spokesperson told FEMAIL: ‘We can confirm that Kmart Port Adelaide will close in the coming months. We want to thank the Port Adelaide community for their support over many years.
‘Our focus is on supporting our Port Adelaide team, with all permanent team members being offered like for like roles at nearby Kmart stores and we are hopeful that many of the remaining non-permanent team members will be able to be redeployed in other Kmart stores and other Wesfarmers businesses.’
Daily Mail Australia understands Kmart regularly reviews its store network, and in this particular area the retailer has a number of stores nearby to support customers.
An official closure date is yet to be announced but customers will be informed once a decision has been made.
