R&B singer Jill Scott is slammed for savaging the US National Anthem

R&B singer Jill Scott has been eviscerated for savaging the US National Anthem by singing ‘not the land of the free, ‘blood built this land’ and ‘home of the slave.’

Scott sang the woke attack on the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ at the annual New Orleans’ Essence Festival on Sunday during Independence Day celebrations.

The rendition refers to the black experience in America and starts with: ‘Oh, say, can you see, by the blood in the streets, this place doesn’t smile on you, colored child.’

‘Whose blood built this land with sweat and their hands. But we’ll die in this place and your memory erased,’ she continues.

‘Oh say, does this truth hold any weight? This is not the land of the free but the home of the slaves.’

The liberties taken by Scott have enraged Americans after a portion of the Anthem was posted online by Essence magazine which hosted the annual event.

‘Everyone please rise for the only National Anthem we will be recognizing from this day forward,’ they posted July 5 with a segment of the song.

‘This is nauseating . No only is the singing awful; the hateful message is even more repulsive,’ said one twitter user.

Another said: ‘Telling young black people they are victims of oppression they never experienced, and doesn’t exist today, is providing them a crutch they can use to fail in life.

‘We should be teaching more people to look inward, hold themselves accountable for what they can control so they can improve their lives.’

‘Keep preaching that division,’ another critic expressed.

‘It’s repulsive. If you want to make an anti-America song, that is your First Amendment right as an American citizen, but to b******ize the National Anthem is DESPICABLE,’ said one person.

‘I love Jill Scott. She is the pride of Philadelphia and an icon. This is so heartbreaking for me to see,’ Mannarino tweeted.

‘I could name you every song she’s ever done, this might be a bridge too far for me though. So sad to see her go this route.

‘She is so talented. She doesn’t need to go this route.’

Jill Scott’s rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner

Oh, say, can you see, by the blood in the streets, this place doesn’t smile on you, colored child.

Whose blood built this land with sweat and their hands.

But we’ll die in this place and your memory erased.

Oh say, does this truth hold any weight?

This is not the land of the free but the home of the slaves.

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado tweeted ‘Shameful.’

She added: ‘No one should use the National Anthem to express their hatred for America. Too many men and women have sacrificed their lives for our great nation to tolerate this.’

Meanwhile, former Florida congressional candidate Lavern Spicer, another Republican, slammed Scott for her ‘woke rendition.’

‘R&B singer Jill Scott did a WOKE rendition of the National Anthem where she changed the lyrics to speak about how oppressed Black people are,’ she wrote.

‘She says ‘This is not the land of the free, but the home of the slave’ For reference, Jill Scott’s net worth is estimated to be $12 MILLION and is likely much higher. In what way is she oppressed?’

This isn’t the first time Scott has sung this rendition but Sunday marked her most high profile performance.

In an interview with Jemele Hill on her podcast Unbothered Scott revealed that she’d considered leaving America due to the racial climate.

‘There are some things you don’t have to deal with in other countries,’ she said.

‘We’re looking at Holland, the education is dope, the healthcare is dope.

‘There’s very few confines on your personality and if you want to go get some a** or buy some a** ain’t nobody tripping on you.

‘I like the idea of people being able to be free as long as you’re not harming anybody.’
