Bayern Munich are due to make an improved near £70million bid for Harry Kane, but they want the transfer settled quickly.

However, even the new offer seems unlikely to meet Tottenham’s expectations, leaving the striker in limbo as he returns to training before Spurs set off on their pre-season tour to Australia, Thailand and Singapore on Friday.

The Bundesliga champions have yet to bid more than €70m (£56m), which won’t be enough to convince Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to sell, even though Kane, 30 this month, has just one year left on his contract.

A second bid, worth marginally more with contingent clauses, might reach €80m (£68m), but that appears to be the upper end of Bayern’s projections for a player who will be free next summer – though they would face a much more competitive challenge to sign him then.

And they can’t really wait a season. Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has made Kane Bayern’s No1 target, a centre forward being an absolute must, with the club struggling to fill the gap left by Robert Lewandowski’s departure to Barcelona last summer.

Though they won the Bundesliga, they did so only on the last day of the season, were roundly beaten by Manchester City in the Champions League quarter final and at one stage looked like finishing the season without a trophy for the first time since 2012.

Bayern are completing the €50m signing of Napoli’s South Korean centre half Kim Min-Jae and want the centre forward issue settled quickly. Tuchel has increased his power since the departure of sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić and Kane is his favoured choice, meaning the club will make further efforts to sign him.

Tottenham’s stance remains that they don’t want to sell the payer and have no expectation that he will leave, with one year remaining on his deal. They would prefer to extend his deal but it will clearly take a huge bid, likely beyond what Bayern will offer, to persuade them to sell this summer.

Tuchel is understood to have convinced the player and his family of the merits of playing in Munich and the club will undoubtedly ensure that Kane, wife Katie and their three children are integrated into the wider Bayern community with schools, houses, language and practical support all potentially in place to make for smooth transition. Kane, will get to play in the Champions League, while Spurs have no European football next season. He would also pretty much guaranteed the first trophies of his career.

Bayern kick off their Bundesliga campaign on August 18th and have made the running for Kane this summer, conscious that Spurs are unlikely to sell him to a Premier League club.
