Lewis Hamilton wants ‘serious’ talks with Mercedes – despite landing a podium finish at the British Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who made a nightmare start and dropped to ninth, benefitted most from the safety car deployed on Lap 31 after an engine fire in the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.

But despite ending up third, Hamilton is adamant there are still a number of things Mercedes must do to get themselves back into race win contention, something he hasn’t managed since Saudi Arabia in 2021.

‘It’s definitely been an up-and-down season in the last year and a half,’ he said.

‘We have a lot of work to do. I think I know exactly what we need to do and we have got to have some serious conversations about what we are going to do moving forward.’

He added: ‘The McLaren is proof of the direction they have gone and it’s impressive how quick they were in the high speed.

‘We have strengths in our car – long runs particularly are great. As soon as we have the rear end that they have, we will be on our way.’

Hamilton labelled Lando Norris’ McLaren a ‘rocketship’ after failing to get past his rival on the inside of Turn 7 following the restart after the safety car.

There was a confidence in the Mercedes garage after the restart that Norris, put on a set of hard tyres, would struggle against the pace of Hamilton on the softs. What instead played out was a frustrating run to the finish for the Silver Arrows.

‘Knowing what it’s like to be on the hards in the restart at the end with someone on the softs behind, I knew that it would be difficult,’ Hamilton added, before saying he had no complaints at being beaten by a faster car.

‘They deserve to have the performance they have,’ he said.

‘We’ve got to do a better job. They’ve now done a better job than us.

‘What I would say is that this is one of the most exciting times I think we’ve seen in the sport, where we’re finally starting to see the regs pull people closer.’
