A backpacker who allegedly tried to smuggle a gold-plated handgun into Australia has been spotted grocery shopping for the first time since being released on bail.

Heavily-tattooed US citizen Liliana Goodson, who uses ‘they/them’ pronouns, was spotted shopping at busy Bondi Beach Metro Woolworths on Sunday afternoon.

Gone was the long dark hair, replaced with a short crop which showed off an array of colourful facial tattoos and piercings.

Goodson – who is also known as River SolDorado Salvatore Chunga – wore bright pink trainers and a matching bum-bag while sporting ultra long eyelashes and long acrylic nails.

One of the most noticeable changes in appearance was the removal of the distinctive horn through the nose.

Goodson's previous look was most noticeable for the distinguishing horn through the septum of the nose.

Goodson, who purchased a block of Cadbury’s Marvellous Creations chocolate, struggled when using the self service checkout screen due to having long acrylic nails.

The graphic designer was arrested at Sydney Airport on April 23 after Australian Border Force allegedly found a golden handgun hidden in hand luggage, with the aid of an x-ray machine.

Goodson was flying into Australia from Los Angeles.

The weapon was a gold-plated Colt 45 pistol with pearl handle which is estimated to be valued at more than $2000. It was not loaded when it was seized by authorities.

The 28-year-old was in custody for more than two weeks after being charged with importing an unauthorised illegal firearm.

Goodson was granted bail and released on May 8, with $10,000 bail to be deposited within three days.

On Wednesday 10 May Magistrate Miranda Moody warned the US traveller was in “danger of losing her bail” if the outstanding $6500 was not paid.

Unlike most tourists living on a shoe-string budget, Goodson is understood to be living at ‘luxury boutique accommodation’ The Baxley, near Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach.

Weekly rates for the hotel range from $1141 for a “compact” room with a shared bathroom, to $1820/week for a premium queen room with en-suite bathroom.

On the website, the hotel boasts “premium linen, luxurious locally-sourced botanical amenities, communal lounge, kitchenette and laundry facilities”.

As part of the bail conditions, Goodson was required to report to Kings Cross police station daily and forced to surrender the passport they used to enter the country – and is prohibited from applying for a replacement.

Goodson grew up in U.S. southern state of Alabama and studied physics at Troy University after finishing high school.

Goodson worked in a range of hospitality jobs after 2016 and had a stint as a tattoo artist in Andalusia for three years before relocating to Los Angeles and moving into freelance graphic design.

Liliana will return to court for a bail review on 12 July.
