Barry Cable dumped from Sport Australia Hall of Fame after being found guilty of sexual abuse

Disgraced footy star Barry Cable is dumped from Sport Australia Hall of Fame after he was erased from the AFL’s honours list for being found guilty of sexually abusing a girl for five years

Disgraced former footballer Barry Cable has been stripped of his Sport Australia Hall of Fame honours after a judge found he had sexually abused a Perth girl at the height of his playing career.

The SAHOF released a statement on Monday confirming Cable’s membership with the organisation had been revoked, after a unanimous decision from its board.

‘Induction into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame is reserved for the best of the best,’ the SAHOF said in a statement.

‘Those who are inducted into this elite group have not only excelled in their chosen field, but uphold the character traits of dignity, integrity, courage, modesty and pride.

‘Cable’s actions are contrary to the values of the organisation, and as a result his SAHOF membership is revoked immediately.’

Late last month, the AFL Commission stripped Cable of his Australian Football Hall of Fame honours.

North Melbourne, the club Cable played for and coached, also erased him from their Hall of Fame books.

That came just days after the Western Australian Institute of Sport confirmed they had removed Cable’s WA Hall of Champions Honours.

The West Australian Football Commission followed WAIS hours later by revoking Cable’s Hall of Fame membership, including his Legend status.

The fallout comes after a civil trial in Perth in which Judge Mark Herron found Cable repeatedly abused his victim over the space of five years from 1968.

The abuse started when the girl was aged 12 or 13.

Judge Herron also said there was compelling evidence put forward during the civil trial that Cable violated other children.

Cable, who repeatedly attempted to have the court case proceedings permanently thrown out and did not attend the trial, has denied the abuse.

He has not been charged with any criminal offences.

His victim doesn’t expect to receive any compensation from the now-bankrupt Cable despite being awarded $818,700.
