‘Gut wrenching’: Ryan Reynolds sends a heartfelt message to Wrexham player Ben Tozer after he announced the sudden death of his father following a brain operation on Sunday night

Ryan Reynolds sent a classy message to support Wrexham star Ben Tozer on Tuesday after the player revealed his father had tragically passed away from leukaemia.

The Wrexham co-owner, reacting to Tozer’s emotional message on Twitter, said: ‘Gut wrenching. Sending so much love to the Tozer family.’

Tozer revealed on social media that his father had been diagnosed with leukaemia on Saturday and was required to undergo a brain operation the following day.

The surgery ‘went positively’ according to Tozer, but unfortunately his father passed away on Monday evening.

The 33-year-old defender said: ‘On Saturday, I was told my Dad has leukaemia but it’s treatable.

‘On Sunday night, he required a brain operation, which went positively, then last night the unthinkable happened.

‘Sadly, all of this happened because he had left it too late. Unknowingly, he was masking the fact he was [in] complete agony. “Go and get checked” we regularly said.

‘He was just too scared of what it could be. Thank you, Dad. Our last words together will live with me forever. I love you. I hope we have all done you proud.’

Reacting to his emotional message, the club offered their condolences on social media, tweeting: ‘So sorry to hear this. Our thoughts are with you and your family.’

Tozer helped Wrexham win promotion from the National League last season, as the Welsh club ended their 15-year stint in non-league football.

Reynolds and fellow Hollywood co-owner Rob McElhenney have played a major role in Wrexham’s rise back to the football league, significantly raising the club’s transfer budget and building a strong connection with fans and the community.

Due to the their investment and track record of luring high-profile players, such as former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster, Wrexham are among the favourites to earn promotion from League Two next season.
