I’m A Celeb’s Maria Thattil opens up about homophobia and reveals she’s often told she ‘doesn’t look queer’

Despite it being 2023, Maria Thattil said she is often at the receiving end of homophobic comments.

The former Miss Universe Australia came out as bisexual while she was a contestant on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! last year, and she recently had a high-profile relationship with TikTok star Jorgia O’Hare.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Maria, 30, said people often say to her ‘its a shame’ and ‘a waste’ that her relationships with men didn’t work out and that she dates women.

The model also said people often tell her she ‘doesn’t look queer’ but that all these comments are ‘so silly and outdated’.

Maria’s first very public relationship was with her ex-girlfriend Jorgia. They broke up after being together for a year.

The couple often posted photos of their loving relationship online, and despite them parting ways, Maria said she doesn’t regret sharing their life together.

‘Jorjia healed so much in me,’ she told the publication.

‘I’m lucky I got to experience a love like that because I didn’t even know it was possible. I couldn’t imagine being closeted and not experiencing that.’

Maria announced on her Instagram last month that she was no longer in a relationship with Jorgia.

She wrote: ‘After a beautiful year together, Jorgia and I wish to share that we are no longer together.

‘Her love healed so much in me and was a light that I was missing for a long time. Whilst we are no longer together, we have nothing but respect for each other and continue to support each other.

‘Our break up has been loving, safe, intimate, secure and respectful.

‘We will both be okay, but please respect our privacy – thank you for the beautiful support.’

Not long after Maria posted this to her over 200k followers, Jorgia also shared it to her own page, and added her own comment.

She wrote: ‘Privileged to be loved by her. I will always stand in this woman’s corner… nothing but love and respect for our connecting.

‘Thank you all for supporting our journey together.’
