Footy fans come up with bizarre conspiracy theory about why Billy Slater’s Maroons lost Origin ‘dead rubber’ to NSW
- Fans have aired a left-field conspiracy theory
- Some believe Billy Slater lost on purpose
- Fans have called it ‘masterful’ coaching
Footy fans have aired a left-field conspiracy theory after State of Origin Game 3, claiming the Queensland side are playing mind games with their New South Wales opponents.
Brad Fittler’s Blues salvaged some pride with a 24-10 win at Accor Stadium on Wednesday night, as the Maroons notched up their second straight series victory.
Maroons coach Billy Slater lost a few tactical battles in game three, but some fans are suggesting that it was all part of a master plan.
The Blues have lost three of the last four series under Fittler, whose reign in charge of the side would almost certainly of ended with a Maroons clean sweep on Wednesday night.
Now fans are floating the theory that the Queensland loss will keep Fittler in a job.

Some fans believe the Blues win was all part of Billy Slater’s master plan
‘Qld deliberately losing so Freddy keeps his job. We’re out here playing chess etc,’ sports journalist Jon Tuxworth posted to Twitter.
‘Slater playing the long game, forcing NSWRL into dilemmas like re-signing Fittler and picking certain players next year. Masterful coaching,’ wrote another.
‘Slater playing the long game. Massive rope-a-dope move this is.’
‘Slater mind games,’ said another.
Some fans even suggested the conspiracy theory that James Tedesco’s good performance could be attributed to Slater.
‘Letting Tedesco make a line break for a possibly match winning try… Has there ever been a greater genius than Billy Slater?’ suggested a fan
‘Geniuses mate,’ replied another.
Fittler attracted heavy criticism when he revealed his game three squad, and a win for him on home soil may have secured his position for another year.
The man himself is still not yet certain if he will lead the NSW Blues for a seventh year, despite the impressive performance on Wednesday.
‘It may have had a bearing on what the board may think, because they will decide who is going to be the coach going forward,’ Fittler told reporters post-match.
‘Gathering they will speak to me about how I feel and if I have the energy and want to do it.

‘Them playing well today and winning, the consequences of being beaten by 30 would have been different.’
Fittler added: ‘We’ll wait and see.
‘I’m still there for a couple of months, so we’ll wait and see.’
