Rory McIlroy earned a share of the clubhouse lead as the Northern Irishman produced a six-under-par opening round at the Scottish Open.

McIlroy had insisted prior to the event that he is as close as he has been to winning another major ahead of next week’s Open Championship in Hoylake.

The comment was underlined by an impressive opening round at the Renaissance Club in North Berwick as he grabbed a share of the early lead in the Scottish Open.

McIlroy joined Belgium’s Thomas Detry on six-under-par, with South Korea’s An Byeong-hun still to complete his round.
