Home And Away’s Lynne McGranger admits she was shocked to learn of co-stars’ on set romance: ‘I nearly died!’

Home And Away fans have been loving the recent romantic storyline between characters Irene Roberts and John Palmer.

The characters, played by Lynne McGranger and Shane Withington, have been in a hilarious fake relationship on the soap.

Speaking to 7Life, Lynne, 70, said she believes their chemistry on the show is down to the fact that they have been friends for a long time.

While Shane has been on the show since 2009, he and Lynne had known each other for 13 years previous to him joining the cast.

Before entering Summer Bay, Shane was known for being on Channel Seven soap A Country Practice.

His love interest on this program was a character called Molly, who was played by actress Anne Tenney.

Despite being acquaintances, Lynne was shocked to discover that he was married to Anne, his former on-screen partner.

‘About two years after Shane joined the show we were both in the green room and I said to him, “You married?”‘ Lynne told the publication.

‘He goes, “Yeah I’ve got a partner, we’ve been together for 30” years at the time.

‘She plays Molly on A Country Practice, and I nearly died!’

Despite being a soap star herself, Lynne loves following other on-screen romances and was delighted to hear that Shane and Anne’s became a thing off-screen.

She added: ‘I suddenly turned into this hopeless soap romantic, I couldn’t believe it and (was) so excited that the real Brendan and the real Molly were actually together in real life. It was the most exciting thing ever!’

The soap actress said she believes fans are enjoying the fake love-story plot between John and Irene because it’s lighthearted.

She added that it has been ‘so fun’ to shoot and that producers have given her and Shane ‘free rein’ with the storyline.
