Burnley hit a snag as they struggle to complete a deal for Borussia Dortmund youngster Soumaila Coulibaly… but are boosted by the return of Wout Weghorst after his Man United loan

Burnley’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund defender Soumaila Coulibaly has hit a hitch that could rule the defender out of a move.

Vincent Kompany’s newly-promoted Premier League hopefuls were aiming to sign-off a transfer for the highly-rated youngster and had agreed to complete a deal.

Initial terms had seen Burnley accept an initial loan that would also include a £15million obligation to buy at the end of that period.

The 19-year-old had completed his medical with last season’s Championship victors, however, there is now a fear that the deal may fall through as pre-season preparations ramp up.

Coulibaly began his youth career at Paris Saint-Germain and was previously linked with moves to both Manchester United and Barcelona before agreeing to join Borussia Dortmund given their glowing reputation of producing young stars.

He made 13 appearances in the German third-tier last season and also played 45 minutes in a Bundesliga outing against Stuttgart and similarly featured against Copenhagen in the Champions League.

Coulibaly, who is of Malian descent, was born in Montfermeil in northern France, and represented the European country at under-16 and under-17 level back in 2019.

Meanwhile, Burnley have been boosted by the return of Wout Weghorst following the end of his loan spell at Manchester United.

The Dutchman was sent out on separate loan deals to Besiktas and United last season and became an integral part of Erik ten Hag’s attack as the Red Devils finished third in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup.

The 30-year-old made 31 appearances for Ten Hag’s side and has previously failed to feature in pre-season training at Turf Moor.

That changed when Weghorst was videoed arriving at the club’s Gawthorpe training complex on Thursday and explained his ambition is to be ‘successful’ at Burnley.
