Tragedy at Sydney train station: Person jumps in front of a moving train – with services cancelled and delayed
- Incident involving emergency services at Mortdale
- Disrupted services on T1 and south coast train lines
- Delays expected to flow into afternoon peak
One of Sydney’s busiest train lines has been plunged into chaos after a person reportedly jumped onto the tracks and was hit by moving train.
Emergency services were called to the scene at Mortdale in Sydney’s south on Friday afternoon.
Commuters said there were ‘ambulances everywhere’ as Mortdale train station was shut down and cordoned off to the public.
It’s understood the incident ‘requiring emergency services’ is self-harm related.
No other details, including the condition of the person are available.
The incident brought services on the T4 and south coast lines to an abrupt halt with commuters urged to delay their travel.

‘Trains are not running between Sutherland and Hurstville in both directions due to an incident requiring emergency services at Mortdale,’ a Sydney Trains alert stated.
‘Buses are being arranged to run, but none are available right now.’
Train services have since resumed and are stopping at Mortdale again.
A train requiring mechanical repairs at Sutherland has added to the delays.
‘Trains may be stopping at different platforms and may be delayed. Stops may change at short notice,’ an alert stated.
Commuters are urged to add an extra 45 minutes to their travel time.
Delays are expected to flow into the peak afternoon period.
‘At this stage, some service disruptions may occur during the afternoon peak. Please listen for announcements, check information screens and apps before getting on trains,’ an update states.
