Tragedy as nine-year-old girl drowns during family camping trip

A young girl has died in an apparent drowning during a camping trip. 

The nine-year-old girl died near the Bivouac Junction camp grounds, about 30km east of Charters Towers, a rural town in North Queensland, on July 8. 

Paramedics rushed to the scene and found the primary school-aged girl in a critical condition. Despite their best efforts, she could not be revived.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed to 9News that paramedics attended a drowning incident last Saturday. 

A QPS spokesperson said: ‘Police are preparing a report for the coroner following the drowning death of a child at Bivouac Junction Road Dotswood on July 8’. 

Police remain in contact with the girl’s family.
