Qatar’s under 19 goalkeeper was sent off during a decisive penalty shootout, only for his replacement and captain to step in and earn qualification to next summer’s Asia Championships in Indonesia.
Having battled out a 1-1 draw in Doha – Mohammed Yaseen’s penalty leveling the tie for Iraq after Abdulla Nasser Al-Murisi opened the scoring on half time – a penalty shoot out was required with the side’s boasting identical records in Group C.
As presented by Four Four Two, the shootout wasn’t without its drama as Qatar goalkeeper, Shehab Mamdouh, denied two of Iraq’s spot kicks before making, what he believed to be, the match-winning save.
Outfielder Nasser Abdulsalam pulled off penalty shootout heroics to send Qatar to the under 19 Asia Championships after goalkeeper was sent off for infringing an opposition spot kick
The Qatar keeper, Shehab Mamdouh, helped his side to an early advantage in the shootout after saving two of Iraq’s spot kicks in the under 19 Asian Championship qualifier
As Mamdouh runs off in celebration after supposedly sealing a 4-3 win in the shoot out, and their qualification, the referee sounds his whistle relentlessly to gain the players’ attention, before gesturing that the goalkeeper had stepped off his line before the ball was struck.
Normally, this would result in a retake, but the referee felt it necessary to book the goalkeeper for his eagerness, and, unfortunately for him, it was his second yellow.
Mamdouh, to his disillusions, was dismissed and left his Qatar team-mates all-but doomed as they attempted to see out the shoot out with the advantage he had secured.
