A woman has shed light on why restaurants give you free bread baskets before ordering your meal – and it’s not to be generous.

Denise Tueller is a wife and mom who frequently documents her ‘journey to get healthy’ on her TikTok channel.

Recently, the US-based mom took to the video-sharing platform to let viewers in on a secret about the free bread baskets at restaurants.

In a viral video, which has so far amassed more than 1.3 million views, Denise said that the reason you got free bread while dining out was because it increased your glucose levels, which made you hungrier, prompting you to order more food.

Don’t fall for any tricks! Here’s why you should avoid the free bread

  • Eating bread causes a spike in your glucose levels
  • It causes you to crave more and have a hard time resisting food

‘Here’s why restaurants give you a bowl of chips or bread before your meals,’ she captioned the clip.

She noted that you didn’t get bread out of good faith, noting that it actually was a tactic used to get you to spend more money.

‘It’s not because they want you to fill up on the free stuff, and they’re not being generous,’ she said.

‘This is actually a way for them to take more money.’

Denise explained that as soon as you sit down, you were greeted with both a menu and a bread bowl.

So, you end up eating the bread while reading the menu.

‘When you sit down at a restaurant, not only are they handing you a menu, but they’re also handing you the bread bowl,’ she said.

When you start indulging in the bread, it causes your blood glucose level to spike, which makes you hungrier, Denise added.

This will make it more difficult for you to turn down other foods, prompting you to order more than you usually would.

‘They know that a glucose spike is going to make you hungrier, crave more, and have a hard time resisting foods,’ Denise noted.

At the end of the clip, she added: ‘So while it feels like they are being generous, they are actually winning.

‘You order more food, they bring you some more bread, and then offer you a dessert that’s nearly impossible to resist.’

According to Bistro MD, when you consume bread, your body releases insulin.

This will cause the body to crave more food to balance out the drop of insulin.
