Jordan Pickford was the subject of some controversy during Everton’s Sunday afternoon match against Aston Villa.
The Toffees got off to a dismal start at Villa Park, with John McGinn opening the scoring after 18 minutes, tapping in a well worked cross from Leon bailey after Villa opened up Everton’s defence.
Villa threatened on several occasions in the opening exchanges and on the 24th minutes, with Ollie Watkins advancing towards the visitors goal to capitalize on a dangerous ball into the box.
Pickford rushed out to meet him as he tried to swipe the ball away from his the Villa forwards, but ultimately seemed to collide with the England striker.
It was interestingly comparable to an incident during last week’s opening round of Premier League fixtures that saw Onana clatter into Sasa Kalajdzic during Man United’s 1-0 win against Wolves .
That decision sparked much controversy after a VAR review chose to not award a penalty against the United goalkeeper.
But fans have hit out at the consistency of the refereeing in the Premier League today, with some claiming that ‘The inconsistency in this league is insane…
‘Onana did the same thing last week against Wolves and that didn’t get given but the Pickford one now does. Just be consistent.’
After a VAR review, Anthony Taylor awarded a spot-kick against Everton, with Douglas Luiz subsequently converting from the spot, to put the home side 2-0 up.
It comes as Opta claims this is the fifth penalty Pickford has given away in the Premier League since joining Everton in 2017.
