About 8,000 Sydney homes lost power on Thursday night after a possum climbed on overhead power lines. 

Residents in Frenchs Forest, Belrose and Davidson were without power for around an hour. It was restored around 1am, according to Ausgrid.

Ausgrid alerted residents to the blackout through Twitter.

‘When wildlife such as possums touch two wires it creates an arc of electricity between them,’ Ausgrid wrote. 

‘The power line involved tonight was a high voltage cable. Protection systems kicked in automatically to limit damage to the network.’
